Some commentators argue that green design is Utopian and unrealistic. However, green buildings make economic sense. They cost more to build than conventional buildings, but the fact that green buildings are energy efficient means that they tend to recover the extra costs in the first ten years. Green design is not Utopian; it can be highly practical and is financially beneficial.

Which Materials Should be Used in Green Design?

Architects can minimise the impact that buildings have on the environment with materials. Some materials like steel and glass consume a lot of energy in the manufacturing process, so they should be avoided. Low-impact building materials should be used wherever feasible. For example, it’s been suggested that for insulation between walls recycled denim can be used, rather than fiberglass foam, which is dangerous to breathe.
