Lost in the thoughts of another, surrounded by places I've never seen, and exploring infinite amounts of imagination … This is the wondrous world of writing! If I were able to say my world revolved solely around one thing, it would be writing. In my spare time, I plop down at my desk and excitedly type the newest ideas I've generated for a story or poem. Just as some people cannot pick up a pen without doodling all over their notepad, I cannot pick one up without writing a plethora of haphazard storylines. When I'm stressed, writing the story of someone else's life helps me to forget my own, it prompts my mind to think outside of the box, and gives me a better understanding of how people carry out daily occurrences.
Loads of homework, plenty of chores, and the constant pressure to always do my best is more than a tad nerve-racking. My only escape is through the existence of a fictional character on my computer screen. Everything that my character goes through is something I experience with them. After a hard day's work, it's nice to lose myself in someone else's troubles so I don't think of my own. Actually just a few days ago, I stayed up until 1:30 A.M. writing a brochure for Mrs. Hendricks and despite the fact that I was dead tired, I sat at the desk typing a few more lines to my most recent novella to relax myself before bed. Nothing serves as a better anxiety assassin than letting your thoughts flow to life on paper.
Depending on which genre I choose, it may cause me to think of the strangest scenario. Sometimes they are situations that aren't even possible such as, a vampire ravaging a city, a saber-toothed tiger in the world of today, or even a 10 year-old killing her own father. Creativity is the key to the mind's eye and to write fiction creativity is a requirement. A plot may take you out of reality and into a human society on Mars. In my opinion, when you write fiction, impossible is the limit! It's easy to write about everyday life, but the fun is in a challenge. I try to add a little twist or mystery on each page. Life, without the make believe, would be like a textbook. How fun does that sound to you? Lets try thinking uniquely; add a little fiction to your life.
In my stories, I take more than just a simple walk in another person's shoes; I take a jog through the very fabric of their being. The inhabitants of my tales have to be plausible to readers and myself. To make this possible, I am constantly observing and analyzing the mannerisms and emotions of any life that I come into contact with. These annotations make it so I can write each individual with their own gestures, beliefs, and feelings. In turn, I have learned to read people's facial expressions as well as their actions without a single word being exchanged. In the past it has worked to my advantage by knowing when to stay away from an angry person, or comfort a sad one and not having to ask about how they feel.
Want to be at peace? Write a bit. Want to see monkeys on Mercury? Write a bit. Want to see your characters come to life before your eyes? Write a bit. Open your mind to a world of no restrictions. I welcome you to the wondrous world of writing! Enjoy.
