It is not uncommon for writers to face the situation of NOT getting writing ideas. Everyone at some or the other time wonders “what to write and how to write”. Here are some writing ideas for writers.

News papers, TV and Radio: While reading news papers, watching TV or listening to Radio some news might strike you as interesting or strange. List them down in a book. Before writing an article read the news two or three times which you think is interesting. Think of how you would feel if you were the reader. If it appears really interesting then write it.

How this idea helps: Generally you write the strange or interesting news or information in an article, there is a chance of getting more views because interesting information is always welcome by the readers.

Social Networking Sites: There are many social networking sites like Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit etc. Search these sites for writing ideas. Observe the interests of people and the content which is becoming more popular and why.

How this idea helps: As you observe the tastes of people regularly, you can get an idea of how to impress people. In this way the content written by you becomes popular.

Personal Experiences or Knowledge: Everybody has different experiences. As nobody is aware of everything, personal experiences benefit other people. Whether it is your personal experience, or your friends' or relatives' it will help somebody. For example you have a cat. Then you experience the problems of domesticating the cats, the diseases it may get, the behavior of cats etc. If you share these experiences in an article, certainly it will help somebody who is facing a similar situation.

How this idea helps: All minds cannot think alike. The same way, all the experiences are not same. So sharing the personal experiences or knowledge of yours might help the people of same situation who can solve their problems immediately. Naturally people will like you if they solve their problems because of your ideas, so you become a popular writer.

Situational ideas: Whether you are listening to a conversation, or while walking on the road you saw a strange incident, or when you went to your children's school or market, or in the office, no matter where you are, you will get some situational ideas. Then think “if I write this….” and share those ideas. Usually whenever my family members are talking, I think “how is this for an article” and whenever the conversation is going on a new or interesting topic my children make fun of me saying “how is this for your article”.

How this idea helps: As these ideas are generally strange and new, people are eager to read your articles and you will get more readers.

Unique ideas when you are lonely: People say that loneliness is the best way for doing great things. All of us know that for praying, reading and thinking there is no better way than loneliness. While you are sitting in your garden or lying on the bed you may get some special and unique ideas, then immediately write them on a paper. If there is no chance to write them immediately, try to remember the ideas. Write them down when you have time.

How this idea helps: Of course, these are unique ideas. There is every chance of attracting more readers.

Write about the Famous Personalities: Whether it is a hobby, food habit or statement whatever it may be write about the famous celebrities like political leaders, film stars, players, scientists etc. You can write about the famous personalities of history too.

How this idea helps: People are generally curious to know about famous celebrities. So the details of the famous celebrity given by you attract more readers.

Why late? Start today and enjoy writing. Wish you good luck!

P.S.: I have written this article based on the idea #3.

You are right. These forums are sources of ideas for writers. The only thing I would say is, I've seen stories here, just after they've been popular on Digg (when I was on Digg), and noticed that they had been copied almost word for word. This is not good practise.

While getting an idea from a social networking site is great, I don't think that the article should be copied like some people have been doing.

Very helpful article.

Thanks Chan and Alexa for the comments.

Anne, I agree with you. Copying is not a good idea. But social networking sites provide a wonderful list of ideas when it comes to choosing the kind of article you want to write.

Great information Valli. I too love writing, inspired by a few writers who successfully pen down their day-to-day observations, and I found this interesting. But, my writing has been a disaster ever since I tried. Your article has shown me a good direction..........Thanks a lot!
