Are You a True Poet?

Conventional poetry begs its creator, tear this page to shreds.

You may ask why I say such harsh things about conventional poetry, I do so because I believe that poets should not be ashamed to say "I have a thought on my mind, here it is." I believe poetry is an art form that needs to stand up and have guts. It needs to speak its mind without fear. This commentary I am writing for one reason.

To get my fellow poets to write with passion and purpose. I want to read poetry with depth and meaning. Poetry with strength, not poetry that is frail and incompetent that is void. I get tired of picking up books of poetry only to see that the writer seems to be writing out of obligation more than passion. If you have nothing to say, why write? If you have no passion for the art form, why write?

My point is defy convention, speak your mind with boldness. It does not have to have perfect rhyme to be a great poem. No matter what the subject you are writing on,

Always be courageous

I have written for 13 years, few poets in all that time have grabbed my attention. There are some though that have. I recognize passion for the art form. Do not write just to say you are a Poet. Write because you love it and you have something to say. If you are a true poet, one with passion, it will be obvious.

I agree with you completely. I don't claim to be a poet in the true sense but I enjoy expressing my feelings, and I do. I do it for the joy of writing and for the uplifting feeling it gives me.I don't see many poems that reach me, but when I do, it is a joy indeed.

I agree, you should write because you love to write, not because you think you have to.

This is why I write...to get my emotions down on paper. Passion is what it is all about.

Jupiter,
I\'ve been writing poetry for as long as I can remember. I do not write poetry or any other type of content because I have to, but because I love to write it.Poetry and its passion is something that comes streight from the heart. It comes in leaps and bounds. Sometimes when an Idea comes to me, poetry is the best way to get that idea on paper. Poetry is the true expression of emotions we all have. I love writing it. Poetry is the first attempt I made when I decided to become a writer. This a great article.

Nothing you say is harsh. Rainer Maria Rilke gave similar advice to Franz Kappus. It's only convention that may lead us to think that poetry is something we have to "try" to express. Go Jupes... keep spreading the word.
