Quitting your job without alienating your boss is not always as easy as you think it might be. There can be very many unforeseen difficulties. It still is very important to understand how best to do it because you could possibly need his or her help for a reference or even a lead.
- Give at least two weeks notice - 3 or 4 weeks would even be preferable especially if you have been with the company for some time, or if it will be difficult to replace you. If you are in the middle of an important project, ask your new boss if you can stay until it is finished. Whether she says yes or no, she will certainly respect your commitment to your new employer. She will also realize that she will probably get the same respect when and if you leave her.
- Your letter of resignation is part of your permanent personal file. Keep it simple and factual. If you are quitting because you are unhappy, do not put your gripes in your letter.
- Offer to train your replacement. If a new person has not been hired, leave a list of things that she should know. Make copies for your boss and your successor.
- Tell your most important contacts that you are leaving and give them the name of your replacement
