Our Ridiculous Quest for Beauty

How oversized breasts and high-heels are related.

I sometimes wonder if future generations will look back on our photographs of high heels and oversized breasts with a mixture of curiosity and revulsion, in the same way we now look back on Chinese foot-binding, Japanese tooth blackening and extremely tight corsets.

Even surgeons, who benefit most from the ridiculous quest for huge breasts, are saying enough is enough. My question is, when it comes to nonsensical beauty standards, where do you stop? What about a ban on spray-tan and tooth whitening chemicals, neither of which are necessary, nor great for one's health. I would love to add high stiletto heels to the list.

I have known numerous strong women who say that wearing high heels is a choice, and that they don't feel dressed up unless they're wearing them. They are correct; culture and conditioning teach us that certain outfits simply do not look good with flat shoes. And THAT is exactly the problem! (I'm amazed at how many intelligent women fail to understand that point.) Regular wearers of high-heels must feel about their footwear as smokers feel about their cigarettes. A smoker can't possibly enjoy the feeling of 'needing' a cigarette, but is no doubt immensely relieved when drawing the first puff come smoko time. Likewise, a wearer of very high heels can't possibly enjoy the agony of working in them all day, but must really like the feeling of kicking the things off at the end of it.

Life is too damned short for high heels. And too damned short for sore backs. Both high heels and oversized breasts contribute to back problems, to say nothing of all the other risks. Any woman considering either of these fashion statements would do well to consider her motivations.
