Offbeat Sightseeing in D.C.

The Exorcist stairwell in Georgetown is an easily accessible, occult movie location worth visiting while in Washington D.C.

Recently we were visiting family in Fredericksburg, Va., just on the outskirts of D.C. Being that it wasn't our first time visiting and having seen all the usual sight seeing attractions D. C. has to offer, we chose to find some offbeat notable places. Honorable mention going to the staircase from the exorcist.

For the few who are unfamiliar with the film, The Exorcist is an occult classic. Written by William Peter Blatty and released December of 1973, the film is centered around the demonic possession of a 12 year old girl, Regan (Linda Blair). Her mother desperately seeks help and as a last resort turns to a priest requesting exorcism.

The stairs, located at the end of M street in Georgetown, are iconic in that Father Karras, the assumed hero, jumps to his death due to the exorcism of Regan. They are also featured earlier in the film when it is presumed that the girl has caused another character to fall from her bedroom window to his death.

For the movie buff or just an Exorcist fan, the stairs in Georgetown are an interesting place to visit and quite an awesome sight to see in person. There are no huge crowds to wade through and they are readily available for a fan fair photo shoot for the enthused.
