Unique (and Inexpensive) Vacation Ideas

Vacation idea #1: Theme it.

Need to get away? you want to make it memorable, you want to make it unique, but there's a recession and it's in yor wallet! Well, I have some ideas that will get you to your destination and still have money when you get there. This series will highlight one unique vacation idea, while also giving a few vacation pointers we all can use. Whether you're planning a personal escape, a honeymoon, or a summer break for the family, do it in style by making it unique!

This vacation is at the top of my list. Why? Because I love poetry, I love to read, write, and sometimes, I need a "writers-block cure". So Getaway #1 is:

Amherst, Massachusetts: The Writer's Getaway

Amherst, MA is the home of Emily Dickinson, and its there that most (or all) of her work was penned. So, in her honor, they changed her home into the Emily Dickinson Museum. If you're a fan of her work, this would be a great way to learn more about her. How do you plan it? Who says you have to spend weeks at a time on vacation? Sure, we all would love to get away for an extended period of time. But the reality is, between a demanding boss, our families, or just our check book, its no longer practical. So why not opt for an extended weekend?Reserve Thursday, Friday and Monday, using only 3 vacation days from work. You still get 5 days for the price of 3!! You have an automatic  two "free" days (Saturday and Sunday) when you utilize your limited time this way.

With this plan you'll be able to take a Thursday overnight flight from your area and land the next morning in Boston, Massachusetts. So this is what your itinerary could look like:Friday morningOf course you must stay in Lord Jeffrey Inn in Amhserst, MA. If you arrive in the morning on Friday, or any day for that matter, check-in time at the Inn is 3pm or after, so you can utilize the morning and/or afternoon for breakfast/lunch at a local restaurant or cafe and enjoy some sightseeing in route to the Inn.   Once you're checked in, the rest of the day can be enjoyed at your leisure. Maybe your surroundings will move you to write about them in your journal, or reading while sitting next to the Inn's fireplace. Catch up on the book you started reading on the plane. If food is what you crave, dinner is served at the in-house restaurants. Another option is to visit the Botanical Gardens to view an exhibit of over 2,500 different flowers.Saturday AfternoonEmily Dickinson Museum. (Always check in advance for changes to information.) Since tours begin (during the month of March) at 1pm, with the last tour at 4p.m., any free time should be spent writing in your journals, eating breakfast, or possibly sleeping the morning away (which I don't suggest, however, it is an option).

There are two separate tours scheduled, and so as not to miss anything, why not enjoy both of them consecutively if timing permits. The evening can be spent at your leisure; albeit sightseeing, writing, reading, etc. And, of course don't skip having dinner at the Inn, or a local restaurant. Sunday Your final full day should be spent resting and relaxing. Maybe you can finish writing about your trip, add on to an unfinished manuscript, or start the manuscript that has been forming in your head. Whatever your desireis: DO IT!! After all, it's your last day of the Writers Getaway. MondayThis is your day of departure. Check out time is 11a.m., and after a morning of breakfast, head back to Boston to catch your flight back home. You can plan this trip any way you wish. But if you're a writer, or a reader, then you crave to write. And you may not be able to write at home, or maybe you can write anywhere. Sometimes a change of scenery can help get those creative juices flowing. Wherever you choose to go, whatever you choose to do, add a theme to it, and make it memorable. This is the first getaway in the "Theme It!!" series. Next we'll discover how to theme the Annual Family Vacation!!
