Food represents a large and rising share of most household’s expenditures. Of the many techniques to save money on groceries, one effective way is to buy items that are reduced to clear due to upcoming best before dates.

Reduced to Clear

In the days before an item’s best before date comes due it is often placed in reduced to clear bins for rapid sale. Items in reduced to clear bins are often priced 25% to 75% less than their regular prices. These items are often just as good as items with best before dates further in the future.

The Best Time to Find Reduced to Clear Items

I have noticed that there are times when the selection of reduced to clear items are often much better than others. Typically, grocery stores will place more items in reduced to clear bins before or after long weekends. For example, if you go to the grocery store on January 2nd you are likely to find many items reduced to clear. Fruits are often offered on reduced to clear on a daily basis. These are my favourites! Overly ripe bananas make great banana bread and overly ripe peaches and plumbs are great in fruit deserts.
