15 Top Free iPod Touch and iPhone Applications

For those of you with the new iPhone, iPod touch with 2.0 software, or those considering buying either: this article is a must read. These 15 free applications are must haves, and will better your mobile experience.

  1. Aurora Feint: The Beginning

This game application is a must. It's a similar style of game like Bejewelled, except in Aurora Feint, you can upgrade your player by learning new skills and spells that help you better. You can "mine" resources, which you do by lining up 3 or more of the same "resource" in a horizontal/vertical row, and then can smith the resources to better your skills which increase your power & power ups in game. You can also buy blueprints/scroll from the store which are needed to do smithing and magic. All progress is saved when the game is closed, so no need to worry about lost data.
  2. Break

Break is only free for a limited time according to the owner, so you should hurry and get it while it's still free. It is based on the classic game where you bounce the ball up and it hits little obstacles and makes them vanish, where the goal is to destroy all the obstacles. This game includes power ups and space like scenery; it is a very fun game, and is will keep you busy for hours. Also, it offers for you to resume game play where you last left off, in case you close it.
  3. Cube Runner

Cube runner isn't the best game for graphics, but it is certainly a fun challenge. Just tilt your iPod/iPhone left or right slightly to turn it. You have to avoid hitting cubes or you start over. It is a harder game than most, so it will certainly keep you busy.
  4. Go Figure Lite

This application is a must have utility, as it is free, and provides many formulas that help you figure out things like your Body Mass Index, how much to tip at a restaurant, how to convert speed, how to convert temperature, and so much more. All you have to do is set the amount of data, for example: if you are doing your BMI, all you have to do is set your height and weight, and it gives you the results. You can even make your own calculations through a series of steps; so you could add in a mathematical formula that can help you with Calculus. This is a free version though, so it is not as good as the full version will be, but is still amazing for a free utility.
  5. iPint

Although iPint is only intended for persons over the age of 17, it is an amazing game/entertainment application. The built in game in this application isn't really that fun, as you just tilt the iPod/iPhone to direct the pint to its recipient. But the best feature on this is that you can "fill up" your iPod/iPhone with a pint, and then pretend to drink it. The gravity sensors that are built in on the iPod/iPhone make it look like you are actually drinking the pint of beer. It may not be very useful, but it is fun to show people the pint trick.
  6. Labyrinth Lite Edition

This game is very fun because it uses the gravity sensors. Basically you have to manoeuvre a ball through a maze/course that has holes in it. You cannot let the ball fall in the holes; you must make it to the end of the course. All you have to do is slightly tilt the iPod/iPhone, and you must keep it parallel to the floor if you don't want the ball to roll. Very fun and realistic game, a challenge too; however, the lite version only comes with 10 levels, but it is still worth it. If you love it, you can buy the full version.
  7. Moonlight Mahjong Lite

For those of you who loved to play Mahjong Tiles, this game is for you. You can zoom in and out, and can rotate around the tiles for better views. Just click on a tile to select it, click again to deselect it, or click on a matching one to remove them. The goal is to match up all the tiles with their pairs until there are none left. It is a very fun game that will provide endless hours of fun.
  8. Othello

This game is one that I've never heard of before, and I am not entirely sure of the exact rules, but the main goal is to take over the board with the most pieces. You play against the iPod/iPhone, and try to take over the whole board with your pieces, and you can jump over their pieces too to convert them. It's a tricky game, and rather hard if you don't know what you are doing (like me), but it is certainly a fun challenge, and will keep you busy.
  9. Remote

This utility requires you to have a wireless network set up. Basically, it turns your iPod/iPhone into a remote control for your iTunes on your computer. So as long as you are within wireless range of your computer, you can control your iTunes. This is a very handy feature that is great for lazy people (like me) who are too lazy to actually walk to the computer to change the song.
  10. Ruby Repeat

This is a memory game. There is a ruby on the screen with 8 sides that light up. Basically, one side lights flashes a certain amount of times; you then must tap that side for that amount of times. Then that side does that same pattern but adds in a new side, and so on, until you can't remember the whole pattern. This application is good for keeping your mind sharp, and your memory even sharper, plus it is pretty fun too.
  11. Shakespeare

I won't lie, I am not into Shakespeare much, but this application is a must have. It contains all of Shakespeare's works organized by title, and organizes those by Dramatis Personae and the different acts. For anyone who is in an English class that is ready a work by Shakespeare, you may prefer this application over a school book, as it is more fun, and you don't have to worry about losing your copy, as I highly double someone would risk losing their iPod/iPhone. And if you actually enjoy reading Shakespeare, well here is the complete collection, all in one tidy place, and much thinner than any of the books.
  12. Sudoku (Free)

I never really liked having to do all the writing and erasing in Sudoku books, but this application solves that problem. Choose the difficulty level, and tap a blank space + a number from the list of numbers below. It's certainly fun, and easier to carry than those Sudoku books, which cost money, whereas this one does not. You can also resume your game, so no need to worry about losing progress. It even counts your high scores and stats.
  13. Talking French Phrasebook (also available in German, Spanish and Italian)

These 4 applications (or even just 1 if you are only interested in learning 1 language) are great references for the most important things you will need to know. They are useful for both learning, and actually referring to them when in conversation with someone else, as they are easy to access. Just open the application, and select the category (Socialization, Emergencies, Travel, etc.), and then click on the thing you are trying to say (Hello, Thank You, Where is the Airport?, etc.). Then it displays the translation in the other language; you can even click on the translation to hear it being pronounced. I paid over $10 for a French & German phrasebook at a store, and these free applications are even better than those books. Try these applications before even considering a phrasebook in stores.
  14. Tap Tap Revenge

Derived from games like Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band, this game is certainly just as good. This game includes 4 difficulties, and 2 songs in each except for the last difficulty, which has 1. Other than the fact that this game could use more songs, it is great. You tap your fingers when the bubbles/spheres pass the white line, and when there is an arrow, you fling your iPod/iPhone that way (as if you were hitting the side of a drum). The game is amazing, and certainly my favourite, a must have application for any fans of Dance Dance Revolution.
  15. Writing Pad

Based on Apple's "Notes" application, this utility lets you write notes even faster. You can tap the keyboard the traditional way, or you can just slide you finger across all the letters in the word, and the application is almost always correct. To spell "Mitchell is cool" just slide your finger from M-i-t-c-h-e-l, then I-s, then C-o-l. The application automatically fills in double letters where applicable. It is a much quicker way to type out letters, and you can also email these, just like with the traditional Notes application.
