What does business casual mean jeans, khaki's, or a shirt with a jacket? A decade a go suit and tie or a uniform were the business dress. Today it is all different. Even Ann Launders would have to revamp her column on a weekly basis to keep up with all the changes. Everyone has to get dressed in the morning, even if you work out of your home.
Some business functions can be a little challenging to dress for in 2007. Try exploring the following options if you are confused as to what to wear:
New Job
Did you get any instructions on the dress code? Follow them for the first month until you know the real rules. Okay so maybe your co-worker who has been with the company for five years has her own dress code. Just ignore the wardrobe jokes. Your boss will appreciate your co-operation. After a month, you will know what is and is not acceptable to wear.
Company Picnic
Did the flyer have any advice on the dress code? Use it! You will be surprised how many employees ignore the rules. Wearing a micro mini is one way to get the presidents attention but it may not be the way to get that promotion you are after. In today's world, personal opinion is personal so you may never know what your boss really thinks of your attire. If there is no dress code advised, keep it simple. Leave the feather boa at home and go for a clean pair of longer shorts and a solid colored t-shirt.
Black Tie Affair
More is better. Okay you have been working out and that tiny little black dress looks great. Is it to tiny? You are at an office function not the premier of who can show the most cleavage. Keep the following in mind. Can you bend over without everything falling out? Is your hem shorter than your undergarment? Can you see thru it? Remember keep is tasteful and simple. When you shop for this dress ask your salesperson. They can be extremely helpful.
It's Saturday, and the Boss Wants to Meet With Everyone for a Special Meeting
They said casual. Therefore, the torn jeans and holey t-shirt should do. Re-think this out. You are still at work. Ask yourself will your boss come dressed like this. Maybe the new jeans and the striped polo or the cotton skirt and blouse would be better.
Casual Fridays
This is still a very grey area to many employees. Simple is better. Leave the workout stuff for the gym. Jeans in many companies are acceptable. Keep them clean free of holes. Leave the I Love New York tees in the drawer. Opt for the flowered tee or printed top instead. Leave the flip-flops in the beach bag with the halter-top. Keep spaghetti straps covered up with a jacket or sweater.
When dressing for success keep it smart and simple. Concentrate on the job your doing not your four-inch stilettos.
