The Scent of a Man

The importance of a signature scent and how to properly choose.

Glossy magazine ads and late-night commercials will have you believe a simple spritz of cologne will bring a beautiful woman to her begging knees. The image of the "average Joe", holding a box, while simultaneously fighting off the supermodel, who won't take no for an answer, seems to be the common commercial storyline. Although, these images can be quite entertaining, they can also be somewhat misleading. The truth is, pairing up the right scent with the right man takes research, patience and a little bit of trial and error.

The idea that any popular cologne will do, is a ridiculous myth. While one expensive bottle can smell incredibly sexy on one man, it may take on a totally different direction when mixed with another's natural chemistry. It pays to understand the right method in choosing your fragrance and hopefully never having to endure a bunch of unused cologne bottles cluttering your cabinet. The wrong scent can also be horrible, detrimental to the happening single guy and send the wrong signals. Some can even cause the death of an otherwise great first date.

Women are taken by scent, whisked away, mesmerized, and easily imagine sensual encounters. The scent of a man can direct a woman's desire to hit on overload every time. It can fill up her senses with gratifying ecstasy. The right scent can conjure images of illicit intrigue and heighten sexual arousal. The most amazing cologne can leave us weak and unable to deny the magic of chemistry. And, when done correctly, a man's scent can leave a lasting mark on a woman's most private romantic memory. Ultimately, what you are seeking is just that, a lasting impression.

Choosing Cologne

It's very important to become aware of how drastic cologne can change throughout the day. Simply testing in the store before purchasing will not be enough.

Take advantage of samples before making your final decision. The first application of a scent will be powerful and at onset very strong, making it difficult to judge it's true character.

As the scent has a chance to interact with your own body chemistry, it will take on the true heart of your signature fragrance. Your choice of cologne should be based on it's true lingering presence. After about an hour, it will have had time to completely settle, allowing you to make a better educated final decision in choosing the perfect scent for you.

Tips

  • Dare to be adventurous ~ Woodsy, gritty, musky and cleaner scents are very popular, but men's cologne is ever changing and the metrosexual revolution has spun quite a new variety for the discerning man. Newer lines of cologne feature exquisite florals and oceanic scents that are definitely worth a whiff.
  • Important to also note that Eau de Toilette sprays last longest, usually about 3-4 hours of full aromatic design, while Eau de Cologne scents are at their best for a lesser amount of time, about 2-3 hours.
Store in a cool and dark place, cologne will last much longer if kept away from direct light. A drawer or inside a cabinet are good choices.
  • Do not rub cologne into skin, this will change the true scent drastically and may cause discomfort to sensitive skin.
  • Eliminate the competition by using an unscented aftershave or moisturizer. Your scent will maintain it's quality and not be lost in translation.
  • Alternating scents is also a good idea to keep mystery alive and kicking. Experimenting can lead to many sensual glances and help you decide which fragrances are the keepers.

Proper Application

  1. Never Overpower

The word "splashing" by some is taken way too literally and should be considered an extreme turnoff, and it won't matter how good the scent is out of the bottle.
  2. Use sparingly

Take the application process slow. If your cologne has a spritzer bottle, all the better. A brief spritz will leave you in better control of even distribution, allowing the conquest at hand to have to move in closer for the heavenly opportunity.
  3. Where

Cologne should be applied to five main areas, the inner wrists, sides of the neck, behind the ears, chest and ummm.... thighs. You don't want to go overboard, again, you want to entice not overwhelm.
  4. Where not

Do not apply to clothing. Clothing may become damaged and the scent will get absorbed into the fabric.

Being gay, you had me trapped at 'Scent of a Man'! At a party, years ago, I met a man who's scent was alluring. I asked him what he was wearing and he said Vanilla. He would dab a small amount of pure vanilla extract behind each ear before going out. For him, it worked great. Just for some reason I craved cookies all night.
