The first Camaro I ever owned was a 96 Chevy Camaro, V6 engine with T tops although it was a nightmare it was one of the most fun cars I have every owned. The V6 is a weakling compare to the V8 Camaro, which is truly a monster, but nevertheless I choose it because of the rising high prices. When I first bought it I took it on the freeway and it began to heat up. I soon came to find that it had a broken head gasket that needed to get replaced. I searched for a reliable mechanics but as you may know an honest mechanic if there are any out there is hard to find.
When I finally found a guy who knew what he was talking about I was convince the car had a faulty head gasket and the cylinder heads had been worn out and needed to be machined. This is not a cheap job to have done to your car. We agreed on the price of $800 dollars, which I thought was pretty reasonable considering other mechanics had quoted me up to $1k. So I gave him the go ahead and he did the work.
Three days later my car was up and running again. It still had minor problems though the check engine light would come I finally took it to a relative who I trusted but only had time on the weekends. He told me the mechanic had not done what he said he would do he simply replaced the head gasket and it did not appear he had, redone the cylinder heads. I was so mad, I tried to get a hold of him but I could not. So my new family mechanic checked out the engine light problem and determined it was the one of the piston coils that was worn out and needed replacing. We went to AutoZone and got the part it cost about $30 dollars and took about half an hour to replace. I was able to finally sell the car two weeks later. But it was a dream to drive and looked really well once it was polished up and clean.
My advice to anyone who is purchasing a 96 Chevy Camaro would be to make sure you have a mechanic check it out, although it might look like a nice car if what's under the hood isn't working right it might not be worth buying. Also make sure that the mileage isn't too high because that can take a huge toll on the car if it wasn't taken car of properly. Good car hunting.
