A new phenomenon - the sounds of the cash register as your hard earned money is transferred from your pocket or eftpos card to the shops account. Most of the time we don’t even see it, it’s like magic, transaction accepted. Are we addicted to shopping or is it a new disease? What pushes our appetite to buy a product or service?
Mostly, it’s a desire, we want it. Marketing is BIG business and there does not seem to be an end to the strategies these companies employ to get your dollars. Look around you and see who doesn’t own a television, an MP3 player, a mobile or computer. Anyone who doesn’t own these things is labeled a weirdo or freak but it is interesting to note that without these gadgets we could survive perfectly well.
Are we then creating a world that is plastic or people who are really that superficial? Reality is a matter of perception and as an observation we need to balance our desires with thoughts of what is truly important. These are things that ‘parents’ and friends remind us of when we behave like a spoiled child and can’t have what we want immediately.
