I don't know what to say for this idea. I just find this idea to be both weird and important. I feel that this idea can be possible in future and is the need of the hour and as far as I know many scientists are working on this idea.
It will solve multiple purposes at the same time:
- Reduce pollution
- Reduce global warming
- Will make the ambiance of the place very aesthetic
- Net cost will be very cheap
- Prevent the use of non renewable sources
- Automatic regulation of light
I will explain how all the above things can be possible a little later.
First let me tell you in brief the technology.
If not all, but at least all biotechnologists will know that there is a gene in firefly which is responsible for it to emit light. The gene is luciferase gene. Now, if this or any similar gene is incorporated and expressed in the plants then it can make plants produce light.
Now, such plants have various applications:
- Use of such plants along the roadside, parks, etc. to provide light in night.
- They can be used as night lamps in house
- They can be used as indicators for various purposes like alarms, etc
Purposes which it will serve:
Reduce pollution
Since, no electricity is required for the plants to glow. Therefore, use of various energy resources like thermal power plants will be avoided. Hence this will prevent pollution.
Reduce global warming:
Since plants will use carbon dioxide as the carbon source and which would be used for producing light. Therefore, carbon dioxide gas production is prevented and hence global warming.
Aesthetic ambiance:
Since plants with different shapes emitting light of different colors can be used this can improve the ambiance.
Net cost will be very cheap:
Plants once grown can serve for several years without any need for maintenance. This effectively reduces the maintenance cost. Also, to produce them on large scale is very cheap.
Prevent the use of non renewable sources:
They will prevent the use of various metals like copper; aluminum, etc. hence prevent the loss non- renewable sources of energy.
Automatic light regulation:
In this, light can be easily regulated by regulating the genes.
So, this method I feel to be very beneficial in future especially to when we are in danger of facing a world wide energy crisis.
