The Universe Gets Short-Changed

God Vs. the Universe: A controversial discussion.

Setting the Scene

I think it's important to get a few things straight, before I head down this path as I'm thinking this could quite possibly be the first time I have delved into controversial territory, in black and white.

So, for the record, I believe in God. I don't believe our world was created by exploding atoms that magically formed into millions of different living creatures and inanimate objects. Seriously, I don't think atoms are that clever... But we're all here now, so there must have been a "Creator" of some sort. Makes sense right? It's not rocket science. So let me qualify my first statement: I believe in a Creator God.

Cue: Sharp intake of breath... holding... holding... now breathe...

The thing about putting your beliefs "out there" is that you set yourself up to be judged... Which I can not stand!!! But, if you're going to judge me, you'll need a bit more info to come up with a sound opinion.

Universal Principles

I believe in Universal Principles... You know, the themes that are common to most religions, if you're open-minded enough to look. I believe in accepting people for who they are, being humble and grateful for everything in our lives. The reason I believe these things is because there's obviously something greater than all of us, so who are we to judge each other, or presume that we're in some way better than others, or that we deserve good things simply because we're breathing?

My belief in "something greater" gives me perspective. It allows me to step back when I don't like something about another person and let them travel their path. It allows me to acknowledge the amazing things that everyone has to offer, if you just take the time to let them shine through. And it helps me to see the hard times in my life as learning experiences that will enrich my future.

Man... that's deep... and kind of not where I was intending on going... bear with me. I'll get there...

Issues with Religion

In regards to my beliefs about God, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that most religions talk about a god that created the world and yet everyone calls "him" a different name... And I think it's even more ludicrous that they think these gods are different! You know what's different?

Newsflash!

The people who founded the religions in the first place! Come on people... work with me... try a little critical thinking... it's gotta be good for ya! I really struggle with the idea that founders of religions were so in tune with God that they received special teachings and were tasked with the mission of transforming the world into whatever school of thought... It's just dodgy!

How many times have you been told a story, and then when you've retold it you changed some of the words, or mixed up the order, or added your own personal flavor to make it a bit more interesting??? We do it all the time! So, how can people believe that the people who started religions weren't doing the same thing?

You know, I'm not as much of a hater as I make out... In some ways I really admire people who have the faith to believe in something wholeheartedly. I definitely think it would make life easier. Critical thinking is something that happens naturally with me... but it takes a whole lot of energy! When I hear people talk about the strength their belief in God gives them, I wish I had some of that. But my argumentative side reckons they must have that strength to begin with to have such depth of faith.

Anyway, my point is religions give God credit for almost everything. But what about the Universe? Since it was created by God, then I don't think it's unreasonable to think that it's a reflection of "his" values. While function definitely plays a role in design, it's not the only part that matters. It's natural to put yourself into your work.

Why would God be any different? Given my issues with founders of religions, I think it makes much more sense to look to the Universe if you want to be close to a greater power than trust in something you can't see, or listen to someone who could be spinning a whole load of imaginary rubbish. I would rather tune into the creator's energy by opening myself to the Universe, than by being dictated to by some mere mortal.

So there it is. The reason why I think the Universe gets short-changed. It offers us everything we need and transforms our lives on a daily basis. And when we offer gratitude we completely skip over the Universe and go straight to God. It's like your boss taking credit for the work you've done! So, I'm giving thanks to the Universe. For the wonderful arrangements, guidance and protection I am permitted, each and every moment of every day.

** “the pursuit of happiness” begins with indifference to God **

It was a time which resembled ours.

Millions across what is now Greece, Egypt and points east all the way to Iran and Afghanistan were tired of war . . . social unrest . . . unenlightened rulers. . . But the rulers were Macedonians. There were no Moslems; no Christians. Those religions hadn’t even been invented yet. There were Jews, but they were of no consequence. Religion was left to the locals, who were mostly polytheists.

The time was about 300 B.C.E. — all of mainland Greece had lost its freedom; democracy was dead. The old gods had failed. Thoughtful people began to turn inward with the help of philosophical guides.

What these Athenian philosophers sought was “artaxia” — a state of mind, balanced and free from pain or suffering, physical or psychological.

Central to this quest was to create an harmonious life within an harmonious culture. A major player was the philosopher Epicurus. Maligned by theists in his own age (340-270 BCE) and condemned by xians ever since as an atheistic immoralist, Epicurus indeed taught that pleasure was the good, but within the context of a rational hedonism.

His views are easy to understand — three of his original letters to his many friends survive. Good translations are in the Epicurus Reader (1994). Used copies as little as $1.95!

The Epicurean groups recruited widely and succeeded well enough for 800 years until stamped out by xian know-nothings — just like those on TV today. Women were admitted on a basis equal with men. Because Epicureans came from among different social classes and levels of ability in philosophy, Epicurus' basic doctrines appeared in short phrases easy to memorize. Here are two of the most famous. They’re still useful:

>> “The four part cure” [four conclusions from Epicurus’ atomic and hedonistic views]

Don’t fear god,
Don’t worry about death,
What is good, is easy to get, and
What is terrible is easy to endure.

written by Philodemus in the Herculaneum papyri 100 BCE.

>> An argument against God as pantocrator. [Why is there evil?]

If god is able to help, but is unwilling. Why call him good?
If he is willing to help, but is unable. Why call him “God”?

The so-called “problem of evil” in a nutshell. Xians have spent 2,000 years trying to find a workaround — they’ve failed. Ditto for Judaism and Islam.

Indifference to religion Epicurus would say is the first step to a healthy personal life and a good sign for a healthy cultural existence as well.

Epicureanism is a very worldly, genial, rational path to what Thomas Jefferson meant by “happiness.”
