The Phonetic Alphabet

Ever wanted to Know how the Police communicate? Just read below.

The Name of the Communication System that the police use is called the Phonetic Alphabet.

A phonetic alphabet is used in radiotelephony communications when the transmission of individual letters is required. The Alphabet is mostly used for transmitting licence plate letters and not so much on mouth to mouth communication. This phonetic alphabet was originally developed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as an international alphabet for use by the armed forces of the NATO nations.

*Please note that numbers stay the same.

Example:
If a police officer needed to transmit a licence plate number to communications he would Say Alpha Bravo Charlie 123 not ABC 123.

This is actually used a lot between pilots and air traffic controllers. And also there are different sounds for numbers. I can't remember them all but here is a couple.
3=tree (Like in a forest)
9=niner (nine*er)
