William Carey

The father of modern missions.

Good morning/afternoon Mr. McCoy and class. Today I shall be talking about the famous William Carey and his devotion to God as “the father of modern missions”.

William Carey was born in 1761. At eighteen, he left the Church of England to follow Christ and soon became a shoemaker. In 1785, he moved to Moulton to pastor the Moulton Baptist Church and he later became one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society. It was in Moulton that he heard his missionary call after reading The Last Voyage of Captain Cook which changed his perceptions and instigated him to spread Christianity.

After copious amounts of persuasion to his local church and to his reluctant wife, William finally left for India to tell others about God in 1793. In India, William contributed significantly to the ministry. He instantly began spreading Christianity by translating the bible into Bengali and Sanokrit which was distributed amongst the Indian populace. Moreover, Carey saved thousands of Indian women lives by protesting against the act of burning widows each year.

However, his time at Indian was also punctuated by various challenges. He received strong discouragement from the infidels. At that time, India was under the control of guerrillas, which strictly prohibited the Gospel of God in fear that it would diminish the Hindu religion. Carey soon became bankrupt on his voyage to India and so he lived a life off the land. His time at India was plagued with difficulties to turn people to the direction of God as he had very few converts.

In 1834, after 40 years labour of preaching and nurturing others as a missionary, William Carey passed away. Through his many accomplishments, William Carey remained humble and gave all glory where it was due, the Lord. Saying to a friend shortly before his death, “When I am gone say nothing about Dr. Carey-speak about Dr. Carey's God.”
