Groucho Marx, master of the one-liner, king of the put down and probably one of the greatest comedians of all time, (In 2005 he was voted the 5th greatest comedy act ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders) lived a full and interesting life. Here are ten things you probably never knew about him. |
- Many people have impersonated Groucho, but did you know that Bugs Bunny impersonated him in the cartoon "Slick Hare"?
- One of the O's in the famous Hollywood sign is dedicated to Groucho.
- Groucho's trademark moustache and eyebrows were false. He only grew a real moustache when he appeared on TV's "You bet your Life".
- He made 15 feature films with his brothers but only 14 were ever released.
- His real name was Julius Henry Marx.
- He had five brothers: Zeppo, Harpo, Chico, Gummo and Manfred who died in infancy.
- He lost virtually all his money (approximately $800,000) in the Wall Street Crash of 1929.
- Shares his birthday (October 2nd) with Sting.
- One of his famous quotes was "Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?" However, Groucho got married and divorced three times.
- During a tour of Germany in 1958, he climbed a pile of rubble that marked the site of Adolf Hitler's bunker, and then performed a two minute charleston on the top of it.
