Seven Facts You Never Knew About George Washington

Did you know that our nations founding father was an active marijuana farmer? That's just one of the amazing facts about George Washington.

  1. Washington farmed many acres of marijuana and it was his primary crop
  2. Washington was the only early president to free their slaves after he died
  3. He was the only president to unanimously win over the Electoral College
  4. While his mother was still pregnant with him, she invited dinner guests over to her house. A lightning bolt struck and killed one of them through a chimney. The family believed this to be a bad sign for the boy.
  5. As a colonel for the Colonial militia, Washington nearly died while crossing a river. While he and his partner were attempting to report data to the governor of Virginia about French movements, they came across a river they believed to be frozen over completely, but it wasn't. They built a makeshift raft with one hatchet and used long sticks to push themselves across. They couldn't make it all the way across in one go, as the currents were strong, so they spent the night in a small islet in the middle of the river. Washington's companion nearly died of frostbite.
  6. Washington had bad relations with his mother, and even addressed her in letters as “Honored Madam”
  7. The estate at Mount Vernon was a rickety one-story building with five bedrooms. Washington turned it into a three story mansion.

What are you talking about? I recently read a biography on George Washington, titled "George Washington & the Founding of a Nation," by Albert Marrin. I found all of the facts, except for the first one, (which I got off of multiple internet sources) inside of there. Marrin is an acclaimed writer of nonfiction.

another cool fact: when he was 22 he disobeyed direct orders not to fire on French Canadians troop; commanding his company to attack a scouting party. The attack killed French commander Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville. Washington and his company were pursued by the French. After they were overtaken, Washington signed the terms of surrender, which he couldn't read because they were written in French. One of the terms was Washington admitting to the assassination of Jumonville, starting the French and Indian War
