qMaurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most well-known graphic artists. His drawings and sketches are enjoyed by millions of people all over the globe. He is most renowned for his so-called impossible structures. Escher created his drawings from the images in his head. Using mathematical figures and patterns, he created very astonishing pictures. But he also made some breathtaking, more realistic work.
During his lifetime, Escher made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings. And he made over 2000 drawings and sketches. M.C. Escher was left-handed, just like some of the greatest artists before him such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Holbein.
Escher also illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage stamps and murals. To make his spectacular art he played with architecture, perspective and impossible spaces.
Even though he was not the best math student, Escher used perpendicular and parallel lines that he drew on planes that were at awkward angles. Even today his art continues to flabbergast and wonder millions of people all over the world. In his work we recognize his keen observation of the world around us and the expressions of his own fantasies. M.C. Escher shows us that reality is wondrous, comprehensible and fascinating.
He was indeed a genius :)
