One of America's favorite cowboys died tragically July 30, 1989 at the age of 26. A bull by the name of Taking Care of Business hit the cowboy with its horns causing the man's ribs to break and severing a main artery. This favorite cowboy is none other than Lane Frost.
Lane was born October 12, 1963 to Clyde and Elsie Frost. Contrary to the movie “8 Seconds” that was made about Lane, he was a Christian and he also had an older sister, Robin and a younger brother, Cody.
In 1978, Lane's family moved to Lane, OK from Vernal, UT. Lane was inducted into the PRCA (Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association) at the age of 19. A barrel racer from Quanah, TX by the name of Kelly Kyle caught Lane's eye and they were married in January 1985.
In 1987 at the age of 24, Lane was named World Champion Bull Rider. The following year, Lane met up with the unridden Red Rock. 309 consecutive riders had been thrown by Red Rock. That is, until Lane Frost came along. On the third try, Lane had ridden the unridable Red Rock. A year after riding Red Rock, Lane met up with the bull that would ultimately take his life and change the lives of those around him.
The year after Lane was killed, he was inducted into the PRCA Hall of Fame. He was the youngest person to be selected for the honor at the age of 26. Lane is buried in Hugo, OK next to his hero, Freckles Brown.
