Henri Matisse

Information on one of the most important painters of the twentieth century.

Henri Matisse was born on December 31st, 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, Nord-Pas-de-Calais and he worked on the French Riviera. He was part of the post-Impressionism and Fauvism movements.

D) Henri Matisse grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois. In 1887 he went to Paris to study law as a court administrator in Le Cateau-Cambrésis after getting his qualification.

In 1891 he returned to Paris to study art at the Academie Julian and became a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. Then he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Gustave Moreau.

His first exhibition was in 1901 and his first solo exhibition took place in 1904. In 1905 to 1906 Matisse produced one of his best paintings, "The Joy of Life". It is one of the most important paintings of the twentieth century and was bought by the famous art collector Dr. Albert C. Barnes.

In 1941 Matisse had cancer surgery which affected his painting skills. He then died 14 years later on November 3, 1954 in Nice, France.

Time Line of World Events

1901-Queen Victoria died, 1903-King and Queen of Serbia were murdered, 1903-Wright brothers fly, 1922-QANTUS introduces air service, 1941-Bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Green Stripe

Green Stripe or Green Line is the title of one of his most famous pieces and is 40.5cm x 32.5cm. It was painted in 1905 and is now found in Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was made with oil and tempera paint on canvas.

The painting features a person's face and a multi-colored background. The focal point in the artwork is the Green Line in the picture. My eye focuses on the Green line and then follows it down south.

No, there is no message in the painting.

Matisse used bright colors on one half of the painting and darker colors on the other side. He used the Green Stripe/Line in the middle of the painting to divide the colors on the face and the background.

My favorite art piece by Henri Matisse is Ice Skating Gliding Start, because the picture looks like two things only using one object. To me it looks like a person with their arms up and one leg up skating and it also looks like a flower. The red background gives it an effect when it mixed with the white object.
