Christopher Columbus 2

One person that definitely deserves his own holiday more that Christopher Columbus is Ronald Reagan.

Although there is a day dedicated to all of the presidents, some of the presidents deserve an individual recognition. On February 6, 1911, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born to Nelle and John Reagan in Tampico, Illinois. Throughout his childhood, Ronald often took part in athletic activities and acting. From the start, Ronald Reagan did not like the idea of communism existing. In 1966 he was elected Governor of California by an estimation of one million votes and then he was re-elected in 1970. 69 days after Ronald Reagan took his place as President; he was shot by an attempted assassin but quickly recovered. His quick recovery showed his dedication to his country and his strong belief in making the world a better place. The time in which Ronald Reagan took presidential action was known as one of the longest times of peace and prosperity without recession or depression.

It is Ronald Reagan who sought to improve relations with the Soviet Union and attempted to make negotiations with Mikhail Gorbachev (Leader of the Soviet Union) sign a treaty that would eliminate close range missiles particularly in Cuba. Also it is Ronald Reagan who maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. Without Ronald Reagan, much of the problems of the world would still be here. An example of a major world crisis that Ronald Reagan helped to eliminate was the Berlin wall. The Berlin Wall was a barrier that formed a border between West Berlin, East Berlin, and East Germany during the Cold War. Thousands of people died trying to cross this wall in search for freedom from 1961 when it was built till 1989 when it was destroyed. Throughout most of those 28 years, Ronald Reagan fought to have Gorbachev tear down the Berlin Wall and let everyone experience life without separation and war. His courageous and strong actions saved the life of many and helped minimize the threat of nuclear war in the Cuban Missile crisis.

Ronald Reagan was a major part in minimizing the World War by doing all of these actions. Unlike Christopher Columbus, Ronald Reagan helped benefit the American Society by reducing war and destruction. Christopher Columbus on the other hand slaughtered many innocent people and doesn't deserve his own holiday. Holidays should be for people that actually did something good in their lifetime. From the moment he lived till the day he died, Ronald Reagan was for the people and did whatever he could to keep America running with as little war and damage as possible. Ronald Reagan practiced peace and equality while Christopher Columbus represented war and greed. Ronald Reagan is the perfect political figure and deserves to be remembered for that entire he has done for the United States as well as nearly the entire world. Without him who knows what would have happened during the Cold War. Also without him, there would have been a possibility of us going into a nuclear war with Cuba ruled by Fidel Castro as well as the Soviet Union ruled by Mikhail Gorbachev.
