Charles Babbage was born in London on the December 26th 1791. He is probably most well known for his invention of the first basic computer. He was a Philosopher, mechanical engineer, inventor and Mathematician. He came from a wealthy family, which allowed him to go to many different institutes, and have many different tutors in various fields and subjects. When he was eight he suffered from a life threatening fever, and was sent to a school in the country to recover in Exeter. However his health recovered and he was forced back to study. He began his studying again with private tutors. Soon he was studying at Holmwood academy, in a class of thirty.
He was accepted at Cambridge university in Trinity College to study mathematics, however when he arrived he was thoroughly disappointed by their maths teaching resources. Due to this he and some other friends founded the Analytical Society. In 1812 he transferred to Peterhouse Cambridge, although he was top of the university he failed to graduate with honours, instead he received an honorary degree, without taking an exam in 1814.
July 25th 1814 marked the wedding of Babbage to Georgiana Whitmore at St. Michael church in Devon. They lived in Dudmasten Hall, where Charles managed to invent the central heating system, before the couple moved to Portland Place in London. The couple had eight children, however only three of them survived to adulthood; Georgiana, Benjamin and Harry. In 1827 Georgiana, Charles father, his wife and at least two of his sons. This emotional trauma caused him to have an emotional breakdown, which is reported to have slowed his inventions. However his youngest son Henry mannaged to use his fathers plans to create six difference engines, which are on display in the Science Museum in london.
Charles died on the 18 October 1871, he is said to have died due to renal failure and cystitis. He was burried at Kensal Green in London. His Brain in preserved in the Science museum.
