Upon graduation, Arthur worked several jobs to save up for college. He enrolled in the University of Michigan in 1934, and immediately began to study literature, and writing.
After college, Miller wrote two plays, The Man Who Had All The Luck , and All My Sons . The latter received much more success than the first. In 1949, Miller wrote Death of a Salesman , which brought him world-wide fame. This play is still considered one of the best in American Theatre. After the success of Death of a Salesman , Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953.
After several other plays, Miller was called to the House Committee on Un-American Activities. America was engulfed in the red scare at this time, and Miller attended several meetings with the Communist party. Miller refused to give them names of others who were associated with the party, and was fined for contempt. The ruling was later overturned in 1958. Arthur also married the glamorous Marilyn Monroe in 1956, but subsequently divorced in 1961.
After a nine year absence, he returned to the theatre with, After The Fall . The play was mostly autobiographical, and wasn't extremely successful. Miller continued to write during the 1990's with works such as, The Ride Down Mount Morgan , and, The Last Yankee . Arthur Miller later died of a heart failure in his home on February 10 th , 2005.
