10 Weird Facts About Ted Bundy's Childhood

This is the second article in a series on serial killers. How does a killer become a killer? Once upon a time, they were born, held, named, taken pictures of. What kind of childhood helps to produce serial killers? In knowing this, perhaps these conditions could be avoided...

Theodore Robert Bundy was born November 24, 1946 and was executed on January 24, 1989.  He fits the typical "American serial killer" role to a tea -- white, male, in his 20's or 30's with an atypical childhood.  He went on a three year killing spree killing numerous young women.  He eventually confessed to 30 murders although many suspect that the number was higher and some suspect the number was much much higher.  He used his good looks to lure victims and often pretended he was injured or was an authority figure such as a police officer.  He was found guilty of 30 murders of young women and was sentenced to death.  His last words were:  "I'd like you to give my love to my family and friends."  Then, he was executed in the electric chair.

What kind of an upbringing would allow a child to turn into a man such as Ted Bundy?  While I am neither condoning nor belittling the agonizing pain of his victim's and their families, such behaviour does give one pause for thought.  Are some people born evil?  Are they raised to become evil?  I believe it's a little of both.  Bundy definitely lead a different childhood.  Here are ten weird facts about young Ted Bundy's life.

  1. Ted Bundy was not his birth name.

He was born Theodore Robert Cowell and remained so for a few years.  After he moved to Tacoma with his mother, she changed his last name to Nelson.  Within a year after that, his mother Louise Cowell met Johnnie Culpepper Bundy.  They later married and Johnnie Bundy legally adopted Theodore and changed his last name to Bundy.
  2. Ted Bundy thought his mother was his sister for many years.

He was born at a home for unwed mothers.  To avoid the social stigma of having an illegitimate grandchild born to a young mother, his grandparents claimed him as their own.  They told young Ted that Louise was his sister and not his mother.  He did not discover the truth of his maternal parentage until at least the end of high school or perhaps in the first couple years of college.
  3. No one is really sure who his biological father was.

His mother gives two different stories for this.  The name on his birth certificate was Lloyd Marshall.  However, she later spoke of being seduced by a war veteran named Jack Worthington.  There is one other option, however.  Some members of Bundy's family think that his grandfather may also be his biological father.  He was  mentally unstable, violent and abusive.  He would also fly into a rage if anyone spoke of Ted's biological father.
  4. He showed violent tendencies as young as three years old.

His Aunt Julia, Louise's younger sister, recalls incidents of laying down for a nap in her home and waking up to find knives surrounding her and a smiling three year old Bundy at her side.  This paints an eerie, strange picture of a toddler arranging knives around his sleeping aunt.
  5. Bundy's grandfather (who he thought was his father and indeed may have been) tortured animals.

Bundy describes incidents of his grandfather Samuel abusing the family dog.  He also claimed that Samuel would swing neighbourhood cats around by their tails.  Ted himself has been said to torment animals with knives.  He would mutilate animals with the knives which seemed to fascinate him so much.
  6. Young Ted was active in the Methodist Church and even served as Vice President of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.

He was also involved in the Boy Scouts of America club.  Although later he stated:  "I didn't know what made people want to be friends.  I didn't know what made people attractive to one another. I didn't know what underlay social interactions."  He was often described as shy and introverted at this age.
  7. His criminal activities began before he finished high school.

He was a habitual liar.  He compulsively stole and shoplifted.  He later claimed that he was also involved in voyeurism at a young age specifically by peeping into windows.  He was arrested twice as a juvenile but the records were later expunged.
  8. He majored in Psychology in University and graduated with a degree in 1972.

He started taking classes upon his graduation from high school in 1965 in Psychology and Oriental Studies.  After a serious girlfriend broke up with him for his lack of ambition, he rededicated himself to Psychology and earned his degree in 1972.  He was well liked by his professors and graduated with honors.  He started dating a woman with a child (relationship lasted six years) while concurrently and covertly re-establishing his relationship with his girlfriend who dumped him.  After a year of their born again relationship, he proposed and she accepted.  Two weeks later, he dumped her and began his killing spree.  He would not break up his six year relationship to another woman until he was arrested for kidnapping in 1976.  There are many who say that most of his victims looked like the girlfriend who original dumped him (long dark hair parted in the middle).
  9. He volunteered at a suicide crisis center alongside a now famous crime author, Ann Rule.

As a part of his psychology classes, he volunteered at a suicide crisis center.  Imagine, a serial killer talking people out of killing themselves.  Completely bizarre.  One of his co-workers and friends was Ann Rule who is now a well known crime writer.  She was researching the crimes Ted committed all the while not knowing it was her friend who committed them.  She later published a book called : "The Stranger Beside Me" detailing her relationship with Ted and the numerous crimes he was convicted of.
  10. Ted was heavily involved with the Republican.

In 1968, Ted managed the Seattle office of Nelson Rockefeller's presidential campaign and attended the Republican Convention in Miami.  After his graduation in 1972, he went to work for the state Republican Party.  He was later involved in a minor scandal when the democrats found out that Ted had been following one of them around posing as a college student and taping their speeches and reporting the information back to his Republican office.

Ted Bundy's journey to adulthood had many odd facets.  Perhaps a closer examination of serial killer's pasts can lead to their earlier detection and possibly even prevent serial killers from killing.

Anybody would feel affended by hearing this. I'm a girl, too. But, thats dumb to say. Ted Bundy was an inciteful human being, with a big temper. If he could've controled that a little better, he would have been a very succesful man.

Ted bundy is actually quite puzzling. He was very attracktive and could have had any one but instead he desided to murder. He actually was married and has a 20 yr old daughter somewhere out there

#7 by Hello!, Nov 11, 2008
Bundy was a sick man just like his father/grandfather. He looked up to him and therefore followed the same steps. We create our children and we teach our children. When i read articles like this one it only makes me want to be a better mother. Lets all learn from this article and be better mothers and or daughters to our parents that have tought us well.

In my studies at Harvard Medical School, I found out that Mr. Bundy was just a man with an obtuse addiction to the female gender. I want you all to know that Theodore had a rough childhood so he is not at fault. Females across the United States were Theodore's icons. Don't judge a man with needs. "Jesse" had a very imaculate point, although I have done the research and personally met Theodore in person. He is a pretty nice guy and we played cards together. He is very good at blackjack!

Wow, this is really getting some comments. Um, to say that he LOVED girls a little too much is nearly as crazy as Mr. Bundy himself was. He killed at least 30 women. Killed, not loved. And to the "Dr." on the last post...Ted Bundy has been dead for nearly 20 years so to say that "he is a pretty nice guy" is a little strange. People with rough childhoods turn out fine all the time. People are responsible for their behaviour and actions. You can't blame a life of killing women on your mom.

I am quite sure that "Paula Mitchell Bentley" does not have a direct insight quite as my professional mind does about Mr. Theodore Bundy. Did she go to Harvard? No! Did she meet him? No! And that is unreasonable to assume that I could not have met him due to the fact that he died "nearly 20 years ago".

These comments are so disturbing on sooooo many levels. He was not a loving man he was a maniac. He stalked, and killed innocent young women. Ted Bundy was a nut from word go. I dont believe in the death penalty but that does not make this man a martyr. His poor daughter is also a victim of his. If you love girls you have more than one girlfriend or you may spend little extra time at a local strip club you dont rape and kill.

Ted Bundy is my distant cousin...and i do not appreciate the comments that *Shannon* has written.......... you dont know the circumstances and stress Ted was under. Ted's rapings were not so called "rapeings" i bet those girls were willing!!! that just doesnt sound like my cousin Teddy

Why is it that I'm the only one that is actually making comments under my own name that you can click on? I'm sure that the above poster is a "Dr." who met the serial killer Ted Bundy and coincidentally, Ted's cousin is also writing here.

My point is this: Ted Bundy was a serial KILLER who RAPED women. Imagine that this was your mother, or sister, or friend that was killed. Ted Bundy brutally killed and raped these women. No one forced him to. His childhood does not excuse his behavior. Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, makes this behavior acceptable. Did these women also kill themselves "Patty Cowell"? I know, they threw themselves at him and then committed suicide, right? Maybe you are related to him because you're clearly loony too. Oh, and "Dr." Kastein -- get a life. Perhaps Ted Bundy WAS a nice guy in your opinion. However, he definitely IS not a nice guy. You'd think someone highly educated would be able to spell correctly and use the right tense in their writing. I guess Harvard isn't what it used to be.

I'm sick of this all. If you have something to say, use your real name. Create an account here so that I can click on it and see some of your other great ideas. I'm probably just encouraging all you psychos by even responding to this but I just find it all so sick and disturbing. Say something useful or STFU! Thank goodness for the delete option. I'll be using it frequently here, I'm afraid.

To comment on ms. Cowells comment We are all under stress I have plenty of stress. But I have never killed another human being. I have had unrequited love and yes it hurts but again I have never killed another human being. And the innocent ladies that lost their lives in the Chi omega house were sleeping in their beds it is kind of hard to throw yourself at someone if you are asleep. Furthermore my comments were not that harsh considering the man that ted was. Like I said before I dont believe in the death penalty. Because I am sure that you too have suffred a loss. But at the same time this man was not sane and NO amonunt of stress can justify the heinous way in which he killed those poor innocent girls. Ms. Bently thank you for being the only sane person on this forum!!

Oh thanks Shannon for commenting here. I was beginning to feel like our world is being overcome by psychos!!! I talked about the problems I've been having here on the comment section in another article. It's: http://www.purpleslinky.com/Humor/Computer/Strange-Comments-From-the-Weird-World-of-Online-Writing.344483 if you want to check it out! I highly doubt that the two weirdos above are either a Dr. or related to Ted Bundy...although I suppose you never know. My guess is that it's 12 year old boys with nothing to do but be ignorant online. Thanks again Shannon!!! You've restored my faith in humanity for another day.

Chilling and fascinating stuff... And so is the Comment Section!- It's like reading a "psycho drama" or something like that. Yeah, a Reality Psycho Show on Triond! - Don't mind, Paula. They can't think nor write properly, and we are in charge of the DELETE button, oh yeah! (BTW, I thought really this guys from U2 wére grown ups!)
#22 by Shannon, Nov 25, 2008
Thank you \"Dr\" you sure showed me. When I go to my car tonight I will be looking for people like you. Your fascination with Mr. Bundy is a little unnerving and kind of scary. Since you think he is such a \"nice guy\". I have a life you apparently do not. Thank you Paula for deleting his stupid comments. Yes \"Dr\" your comments are worthless. I wonder how the families of Ted\'s Victims would feel about some of the things you have written. Since you are supposed to be a \"Dr\".
#23 by Mary Wuapie, Nov 26, 2008
Jeez this site really gets the arguing statments on here. but i really dont want to stir up contaversy but, "Shannon, you seem to be the one that keeps picking up where you and "Dr's." fights leave off. As sick and disturbing as his opinion's might be, you should'n act like a little brat about it. and "Dr." I think isnt even a doctor, but a man that mabye had things done to him when he was a child.... so Shannon you could be making matters worse and dont ever say those kinds of things to people you dont know!!!! it seems to me that your the one that has the obsession!
#24 by Shannon, Nov 26, 2008
Ok that is it I am done here.
#25 by  Paula Mitchell Bentley, Nov 26, 2008
Wow. Shannon, you were the only person on here for the longest time who made any sense at all. I don't think that you're provoking the sickos that keep commenting on my article. I think that you're just trying to let everyone know that Ted Bundy was a serial killer and rapist. This isn't funny, a joke or something to be happy about. You're definitely not obsessed, just fed up with the psychos. I appreciate you and the comments you've left here. Don't let haters bring you down. I don't care if the person here who is supposively a "Dr." had issues as a child. You're not being a little brat. To say that is ludicrious.
