Take Precautions While Swimming!

Swimmers should have some important knowledge about swimming for their own safety. Read these tips on safe swimming.

A major hazard of swimming in the sea or ocean is the rip current. This is the seaward movement of water caused by natural drainage of water brought in towards the beach by the tide. So, it is easy for swimmers to loose control and be swept out. Swimmers should have some important knowledge about swimming for their own safety.

Read these tips on safe swimming:

  1. Always swim or surf at a beach patrolled by lifeguards, parents or guardians
  2. Avoid swimming alone or unsupervised. Children should be accompanied by adults.
  3. Read the signs carefully. If a beach is closed, do not swim there.
  4. Do not swim directly after a meal
  5. Do not swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs as this will cause unforeseen incidents
  6. Do not run, jump or dive in the water. Instead, check the conditions before swimming. They might have changed.
  7. If you get into trouble in the water, do not panic or frightened
  8. Raise one arm up and float until help arrives
  9. Float with a rip current. Do not swim against it.

Flags to look out for:

  1. Red and yellow flag means lifeguards are on patrol. You should only swim in the area between the flags. Never go against the instructions for your own safety.
  2. The red flag means it is dangerous to swim. You should not go into the water.
  3. The quartered black and white flag indicates the area zoned for surf craft. It is not safe for swimmers.

By following these tips, you can safeguard your life while enjoying swimming in the sea or swimming pool. Remember; never take your life for granted!
