Skunked: A Smell So Foul

What to if you do get skunked, and how to avoid it in the future.

Have you ever wondered why skunks have that putrid smell? Their smell serves several purposes. To protect them from predators their smell is a key mechanism. To catch food, their smell can also be used to stun their prey.

What to do if you get sprayed by a skunk

For most people they need not worry about this unfortunate happening. However, if you are sprayed by a skunk, there are a couple things you should do. Most of these things are common knowledge, but I will list them for those who don't know.

  1. Use hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap on the affected areas.
  2. Use externally only do not get in your mouth, nose, or eyes.
  3. Bathe thoroughly

What does not work to get rid of Skunk smell

  • Fruit juice or Tomato baths.

These my dear friends are old myths. Wives tales spun during a saturday gossip hour, They are effective in masking the smell, but little more.

My best advice if you come across a skunk is this, Run! Well, actually back away quickly but quietly as not to spook the animal.

I hope this article is helpful to my readers in avoiding the trouble of being skunked. Take care all and have a great day.
