Here's how to treat poison oak so you can stop the constant scratching.
Take a Cool Shower with a Twist
A cool shower can feel quite soothing to the itchy rash of poison oak but it's even more effective when you use a cleanser called Tecnu. This cleanser is so effective because it removes the oil that causes the skin to be irritated and itchy. The combination of cool water and a thorough cleansing with Tecnu can work wonders on your itchy skin.
Do a Bathtub Soak with Aveeno
Fill the bathtub with cool water and add Aveeno to it. Spend at least ten minutes soaking. After you dry off, try to avoid scratching the affected areas.
Use a Steroid Cream
Ask your local pharmacist for the highest potency nonprescription steroid cream he has available. Apply it to the affected areas. If this fails to bring relief, you can call your doctor for a prescription strength one although it might require an office visit.
Take an Antihistamine
By taking an antihistamine you reduce the levels of histamine in the bloodstream which cause itching. Histamine is naturally released when the body is confronted with a substance it's allergic to. Keep in mind that antihistamines can cause drowsiness and fatigue. Never use one before you drive or work around machinery.
Regardless of how you treat poison oak, the rash will likely disappear within two weeks but you can certainly make yourself more comfortable in the meantime by taking a few of these simple steps.
