Avoiding Beach Disasters

Even a day at the beach can turn into your worst nightmare, thanks to disasters. Be prepared and ready to deal everything from thunderstorms to jellyfish this August!

Everyone is heading to the beaches now that it's August. Unfortunately there are a few dangers lurking in the water and out of it despite the fun and sun atmosphere. Be on the look pout for what could happen. It could turn an otherwise dream of a day into a nightmare. Enjoy the wave sand the sand but just be cautious.

  1. Riptides

These are hitting both the New Jersey and Long Island beaches this year. Be on the lookout for tell tale signs such as rough surf and muddy water (sand churned in the waves giving a dirty or muddy look). Don't let your toddlers go wandering off and keep an eye on the bigger kids too. Hold hands with someone , using them or yourself as an anchor. If you're caught in a rip tide try not to panic(this is a hard thing to do, I know, take deep breaths and concentrate) and swim parallel to the shore . You'll swim out of them and then make your way back to shore. Also swim at beaches where there are lifeguards with ropes and safety boats.
  2. Thunderstorms

If you see dark clouds looming on the horizon pack up everything and run. This can mean there's a wicked rain or hail storm coming within the half hour. Get off the beach and run to the snack stand or your car. You don't want to be on the beach when lightning starts since it always hits the highest object on a flat surface. it may be beautiful shimmering on the ocean but enjoy it from a safe and protected distance. Also be leery of waterspouts. These happen when a tornado combines with a body of water and forms a long tube.
  3. Food Poisoning

Think twice about bringing mayo soaked sandwiches or salads to the beach. Bring ones that have oil and vinegar, mustard or ketchup on them. Also be on the alert for anymore veggie scares. Salmonella seems to be hitting farms like crazy these days. If you or your family do feel sick then head to the nearest first aid or even hospital, depending on the severity. Don't tough it out so that others can have a good beach day. If you feel sick, then act.
  4. Sunburn

Always have a sunscreen with SPF 30. If you can buy the all natural ones such as what Badger makes without any parabens. Slather on constantly - not just once. Sunscreen come s off in the water and rubs off when you use a towel . Apply it constantly throughout your beach day. Also remember to have balm for your lips which have the most tender skin on the human body. Again get a paraben free balms and use it repeatedly during your. beach stay. If you do get a bad burn then, apply ice ASAP or cool water to cut down on the burning. Milk is another quick remedy. Take aspirin to cut down on the pain and irritation. Drive home without the underwear on because tight elastics can further irritate the burn. Jump into a cooling shower as soon as you pull in your driveway.
  5. Jellyfish Stings

Unfortunately August is the time when you see these little creatures popping up on the beach or in the water. Some like the Portuguese Man of War can be deadly and can cause paralysis. First of all get out of the water and then have some carefully remove the tentacles. You can use a credit card to scrape off the unused stingers or nemocysts. Sand or even a towels will do just as well. As for the sting, if there's nothing around you use sea water. Don't use urine. Don't use fresh water because that will release more venom into you.
  6. Cuts Scratches and Stings

Have tweezers on the ready along with some bottled water and Neosporin to wash out he cut and treat it. Carry Bandaids with use but remember to keep it and the afflicted area clean . Sand in a cut can be irritating but it can also cause an infection. Travel safely with a mini safety kit.

Enjoy the beach this August but also be prepared for any thing that can happen. Don't let a disaster ruin your fun time in the sand and surf.
