Everyone wonders why bikers do not pull over for the police. Well, it has come to my attention why they run, especially crotch rockets/sport bikes. After reading this article, it might help you understand also.
I have been riding sport bikes for over eight years. I enjoy, mostly the feeling of the free wind, cruising down the open road. After a hard day of work, going for a ride will always cure the stressful day. I have always considered myself as, a safe rider I guess you can say. I almost never speed, if I do it's only for a few seconds, and then I let off. I respect the rules of the road, I have also had a bad bike accident, trust me, and I know to respect the road. I have seen many videos of idiots on youtube.com, showing off, out running the cops, riding wheelies, running 200 mph, and I have wondered why not just pull over before someone gets hurt. Besides, the chances of catching a crotch rocket for an officer are not that good. They might catch the new guys easy, but, for the veteran bike riders, most of them try to get chased, because it's fun.
Recently, an officer of our cities police department spotted a bike running at a high rate of speed. The officer then attempted to give chase, where he lost control of his cruiser, striking a tree. The officer was air lifted to a more suitable hospital where he received treatment, and labeled critical condition. The biker got a way, but was arrested the next day. Police had enough information for the biker's arrest. That brings me to the question, why does an officer still give chase at dangerous speeds, when he has the information he needs to find the biker at a latter time? I have worked with several different police officers, and have asked why they chase crotch rockets. Their answer was, “its fun.” Only one officer had a different answer. He said, “I don't, it's too dangerous.”
Ok, now here is my story. I was riding down the road, and just twisted the throttle for about three seconds, and then let off, and dropped back down to the posted speed limit. I seen a police officer pull out behind me, he was not close enough to get my tag number, and I could have evaded him with ease. However, I took into consideration that running from the officer, I could get killed, some other innocent person could get killed for my action, and the officer might get killed or hurt if he lost control of his car giving chase. So, instead of taking off, I pulled over before the officer could even turn his blue-lights on.
The officer came up, yelling and screaming, pointing his finger in my face, he did everything but cuss me. Took my drivers licenses and registration, he jerked them from my hand, and went to his car. My cigarettes were in the back of my bike, and I ask the officer if I could get them out and have a smoke. He said no.
The officer came back and asked me if I knew why he pulled me, and I said, “Yea, I was speeding.” Once again, the officer begins yelling at me, called me an idiot. And he charged me with two accounts. First account was, careless and reckless driving 80 mph in a 45 mph. The second charge was, endangerment to people and property.
Ok, first off, I might have been going 80 mph, I don't know, the speeding ticket is just fine, I can deal with that, I was speeding, even-so, if it was just for a second. My bike is a 05 GSX-R 1000. But the second charge, what the crap is that? I could understand that if I was running 80 mph on the back wheel. But I was not doing no stunts or anything like that.
Now, if I knew how I was going to be treated, I would not have pulled over for the officer. Personally, next time an officer tries to pull me over, if he is not close enough to see my tag, I might think twice about pulling over. Hum, one more thing, did I mention that the officer that pulled me over wanted to date my girlfriend? And yes, I knew who the officer was.
