Instead of wearing what everyone else wears, personalize what hangs on your body. Use these quick and easy ideas to create fun, intriguing jewelry. Wearing any of these is a sure conversation starter. People will be impressed with your individuality and creativity. So many items from nature or around our homes are colorful and intriguing. Tie them up, cut them up, or stick a hole in them…just a little tweaking and voila, you have new jewelry.

  • String-up colorful dry pastas on any kind of chain-go to grocery store where you can buy bulk dry food and get some funky shapes and colors of pasta to thread like a shell necklace from Hawaii
  • Go to Goodwill or any secondhand store and find some little Lego men or mini figurines. Attach them (either wrap them or find a hole or convenient holding spot) with wire or string for a necklace. You can make them look like they are holding on to the wire if you hot glue their hands or feet to it.
  • Use an old cassette tape for the chain of any of these necklaces. The shiny black material is an eye-catcher and it's lightweight and stretchy so you can slip it on and off without making any clasp. Just tie it at the right length in a tight bow every time you put it on.
  • Nail through the tops of two puzzle pieces to make holes and use them for earrings with paper clips, etc
  • Wrap any household object--marbles, fly-fishing lures, bath beads, spools of thread-a couple times with a thin wire to secure the object inside, and you can easily then hook the wire with paperclips and use the paperclips for the hooks in earrings if your ears are tough (I've never had a problem) or thread some kind of string through for a necklace
  • Cut up all those extra magnets you have on your fridge into interesting shapes and then poke a little hole at the top. They usually have bright colors to get your attention. I made earrings out of pizza magnets once and people loved them, they were always asking where I got them.
  • Pick flower petals and make a hole at the top of them. Then let them dry and get those nice wrinkles in them. They are sturdy enough (and beautiful enough) for dangling earrings or to hang from a chain around your neck. You can also dip them in the melted wax of any of your candles you have lit. It makes them heavier and more 3-D.
