Follow the directions below to design and sew a country quilt denim shirt:
Materials Needed for the Country Denim Shirt
- A button-down denim shirt
- ¼ Yard each of 2 different country fabrics
- Thin cotton batting
- Fusible webbing
- Scissors
- Sewing machine and thread
- Washable fabric pen
Preparing the Country Quilt Fabric
TO make the fabric accents for the denim shirt, cut out six rectangles of each country quilt fabric. The rectangles, laid two by three, should cover one side of the denim shirt's chest. They will be approximately two by three inches. Be sure to allow at least ¼ inch on all sides for a seam allowance.
After you cut out the fabric rectangles, stitch them together in rows, alternating the type of fabric. You should end up with a two by three rectangle in a checkerboard pattern. Cut a piece of the cotton batting and fusible web in the same size as the large rectangle.
Use an iron to press under the seam allowances on the fabric rectangle over the edges of the cotton batting. Then, place this on top of the fusible web, and line it up neatly on the chest of the denim shirt. Cover it with a piece of paper and iron it in place.
Sew the Country Quilt Denim Shirt
After ironing the country fabric quilt onto the denim shirt, you must sew to finish the project. Using your sewing machine and a complimentary color of thread, sew around the entire outside of each fabric rectangle. Be sure to sew close to the edge in a straight line.
Then, sew on top of all seams where the blocks of country quilt fabric are joined together. This will make the fabric and the cotton batting truly look like a quilt top. If you want, you can also hand stitch around some of the motifs or pictures on the country fabric you selected.
This country quilt denim shirt project is great for anyone who likes the style of country. With these easy to follow instructions, you can create unique shirts quickly. Vary the styles of fabric and the color of the denim shirt for even more exciting looks.
