How to Stencil Paint a Country Throw Rug

No matter what style your home decor is, you can give it a quick and easy boost with a stencil painted throw rug. Starting with a basic canvas rug, you can create a fabulous work or art with little effort or time.

Materials Needed for the Stencil Throw Rug

The rug you need to stencil paint on must be a smooth rag rug in a solid color.  Many craft stores sell these specifically for the purpose of painting or embellishing in other ways.  You also need quality stencil or fabric paint, a sponge or brush, and a stencil of your choice.

You will also need a country style stencil or stencil set.  These can be purchase in many different varieties, such as flowers, borders, words, or pictures, at any craft store.  Acrylic craft paint in your chosen colors can be used with either a stencil paint brush or a sponge.

Preparing the Throw Rug for Painting

Wash the rug before you do anything else to it.  It is important to not only test for color-fastness, but to get out any sizing or treatments put in by the factory.  Lay the rug on a flat surface to dry.

Stenciling the Throw Rug

The last step in creating this home decor craft is actually painting it.  First, plan where the various stencil designs will go.  Start by placing the stencils for one color of paint on the rug.  Use small strips of masking tape to hold them in place if necessary.  Then, use the sponge or brush, loaded with paint, to fill in the shapes on the stencils.  Do not use strokes, but instead an up and down motion.

Paint only one color at a time, allowing each to dry completely before adding the next.  You do not want the paint colors to mix or for the stencil itself to smear the paint.

Whether you want a country style welcome mat or a more modern geometric throw rug, you can achieve the effect you want by stencil painting.  This quick and easy home decor accent personalizes your home in any way you prefer.
