How to Make a Unique Handmade Gift for Mom

Would you like to give mom a unique gift she'll appreciate for weeks and months to come? Here's how to make a giving tree for mom.

With Mother's Day not being too far off, it's time to start considering what to give the special mom in your life. She probably already has most of the material things she wants. What she really needs is more free time. Here's how to make a unique homemade gift for mom that'll grant her the gift of time away from the responsibilities of maintaining a house and a family.

To make this unique homemade gift for mom, begin by selecting a beautiful, live plant in a decorative vase. Choose a special plant that you think mom will love. While you're purchasing the plant, pick up some florist picks and some heavy construction paper in a color that coordinates with the plant or flower you've chosen. You'll also need transparent tape and a magic marker.

Once you return home, sit down and think about all the tasks mom does on a daily basis and write them down on a sheet of paper. You'll really start to appreciate what a mother contributes to the household on a daily basis when you start making this list! Once you have written down at least fifteen things your mom does daily, decide which of these you could do for her as a gift. Consider things like “wash the dishes” or “clean the bathroom”. You can also think of special treats mom might enjoy like a trip to a local restaurant or an evening at the movies. Select at least ten things on your list you'd be willing to do as a gift to mom.

You're now ready to personalize your unique homemade gift for mom. Cut the construction paper into the shape of hearts. On each heart, write a special task or treat using your magic marker. Now, attach the hearts to the floral picks using transparent tape. Once each heart has a special task or treat written on it and is attached to a floral pick, arrange the picks in a pleasing arrangement in the soil of the plant. Don't forget to add an additional heart with the words “We love you, mom” inscribed on it. For an added touch, sprinkle some hard candy wrapped in plastic onto the top of the soil. Include a special card with a note and your gift is ready for giving.

Mom will enjoy displaying her “giving tree” in the kitchen and will get even more joy when she pulls out a heart and redeems it. She'll know that receiving this special plant is like receiving ten gifts in one. What mom wouldn't enjoy such a unique handmade gift?
