How to Make a Hair Scrunchie

Hair scrunchies are a great way to keep your hair out of your face and look stylish at the same time. Here's how to make them quickly and easily.

If you wear your hair in a ponytail to work or to the gym, it's nice to have an option other than elastic bands to hold your hair back. One simple, inexpensive way to give your ponytail style is to use a hair scrunchie. Although you can buy scrunchies in the hair accessory section of department store, it's quick and easy to make your own. Plus, you can customize your scrunchies to coordinate with the rest of your wardrobe. Here's how to make a quick and easy hair scrunchie:

Gather Your Supplies

You'll need one-half inch elastic which you can purchase at your local fabric store. While you're there, choose some pretty fabrics for your hair scrunchie. You'll probably want to select several fabric pieces since scrunchies are so quick and easy to make, you'll want to make more than one. Since you only need small amounts of material for a scrunchie, one option is to buy smaller pieces of fabric from the remnant table or use scrap fabric you may have hiding in your sewing basket. You'll also need scissors, a needle and thread, as well access to a sewing machine

Prepare Your Fabric and Elastic

Cut a piece of fabric four inches wide and twelve inches in length as well as a six inch piece of your half inch elastic. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the printed portion of the fabric facing inwards. Sew up the long sides of the fabric, leaving the ends open.

Insert The Elastic

Turn the tube so the printed portion of the fabric is facing the outside. Feed the elastic carefully through your fabric tube. Pull the fabric ends toward the center so each end of the elastic is exposed on each side of the fabric tube.

Stitch The Elastic

Using your sewing machine, stitch the two ends of the elastic securely together. Once the two ends of the elastic are securely attached, pull the ends of the fabric together over the elastic. Slide one end of the fabric tube over the other and create a small hem.

Finish Your Scrunchie

Use a needle and thread to sew the two ends of the fabric together. Congratulations! You've just completed your first hair scrunchie.

By varying your fabric choices, you can make scrunchies for special occasions such as holidays and evening events. For holidays, look for fabric with a holiday theme such as hearts for Valentine's Day and Christmas trees for Christmas. You can also use fancier fabric for evening hair scrunchies such as velvet or lame. Have fun making these fun hair ornaments!
