How to Have Fun with a Pencil

A great way to entertain yourself with nothing but a pencil. This little trick is both fun and addicting and is a great way to fight boredom.

Who would have thought that a single pencil could be so entertaining?  The "Pencil Twirl" is an amusing little gimmick that can be used to amaze friends and pass time.  Since you only need a pencil, it is also great way to fight boredom in the classroom or during a meeting.

It took me about a week to master the Pencil Twirl, and now I can do it without even concentrating.  It's a very unique skill to have, and can also strike up conversation as people envy your pencil twirling capabilities!

What you need:

  1. A pencil that is at its original size and has a full eraser.  Weight is essential here!  Even though you can do this this stunt with any pencil or pen, I find that its easiest with a brand new pencil - see what works best for you.
  2. Determination.  This will not come easy, but it's rewarding and quite addicting too.
  3. Patience.  You may get frustrated when first starting out - at first, you will have far more failed than successful attempts.  Just be patient with yourself, you'll get it in the end.

Now that you have everything you need, let's start twirling.  To begin, hold the pencil in your strong hand like in the picture shown below.

Don't grip the pencil too firmly.  In fact, you should apply as little pressure as possible with your fingers.  To twirl the pencil, quickly and gently flick your middle finger towards you making the pencil twirl around your thumb.  Once the pencil has finished its revolution, catch it with your middle finger, index finger, and thumb.  The key to success is knowing how hard to flick your finger so that the pencil twirls around your thumb and does not spin away.  This is usually the problem with most beginners - they flick their finger too hard.  Be gentle and experiment until you get the hang of it.

If you don't believe that this is even possible take a look at the video below and see for yourself!
