Yesterday I went to a flea market. I never buy much, but I love looking. There really is some truth to the saying that one man's trash is another man's treasure. This particular flea market is heavy on crafts this time of year and that's right up my alley.
I love looking at how various craft items are made. This time I found two craft pattern books from the 1980's that had things to try that I haven't done before.
The first one is called Chicken Scratching For Toddlers. It's a form of counted cross stitch done on gingham material. This particular pattern book has trains, clowns, frogs and the alphabet among other things. I'm excited to give that a whirl.
The second one is called More Lace Net Nostalgia. This will teach me a very old form of lace net darning that is a form of needlecraft where you create a pattern by weaving in and out of the square of netting using net darning yarn. I've never tried making lace and this should be fun too. I imagine it will take some trial and error. There are roses, pineapples and monograms among other things in the book.
I bought two other things at the flea market. Both were funky chunky necklaces. One is a big sterling silver butterfly. The other is a red and gold medallion on a leather “chain”. They'll give some pizzazz to my sweatshirts this winter.
Of course no flea market would be complete without food stands sprinkled everywhere. I love the warm cinnamon pecans as my treat for the day. This time I splurged and had a caramel apple too. I could have had anything from a corn dog to a fajita.
All in all it was a beautiful day to be out and a great way to sneak in some exercise. This venue will have another flea market in the spring and I can't wait.
I love flea markets.
