Playing Cards

A description of a thoughtful souvenir from England.

When my daughter visited England as a college student at Oxford University, she was afforded the opportunity to delve into English customs and mores.

What she discovered outside of the Tower of London was a marvelous deck of playing cards.

I am holding in my possession the famous kings and queens of England playing cards. Each card depicts a full color portrait of all the monarchs of England from Alfred the Great to our present Queen Elizabeth II. These cards afford me the luxury of increasing my knowledge of what the English know by being born there. For example the ace of diamonds depicts a blonde in knee high dress holding up his left arm and waving at his people.

I now know from looking at his card that he was King from 871 to 899. These cards are marvelous as travelling entertainment and can be discreetly carried on board plane or ship to spend endless hours in occupying one's mental needs.

The cards are manufactured in Belgium and their internet address is here.
