Ever since the new coins were introduced to New Zealand , there has been an outstanding demand for the 2004 5cent piece. Since The Reserve Bank declared that in 2004 that they will no longer be making anymore 5 cent pieces (de-monetized) the general public started spending them or finding ways to get rid of them thinking that they would be of no use to them.
The Reserve Bank destroyed 50 million 2004 5cent pieces but 32,000 were left in circulation.
One 2004 5cent piece which was put up for auction on Trademe sold for $360.00, since than quite a number of 5c coins are being listed. This will definitely bring the price down.
However, the 2004 5cent is not the only coin that is currently in demand
| 2004 | 5c | $150 approx |
| 2005 | 10c | $40 approx |
| 2005 | 20c | $10 - $15 |
| 2005 | 50c | $10 - $15 |
| 1976 | 5c | $10 approx |
All prices above are in New Zealand dollars.
I guess now, it might pay to check your 5c coins before you decide to give them away to charity, or which ever.
