Preparing Your Car for Summer

It's true that our vehicles are and will be the second largest investment we'll ever make and yet we know we should take good care of them.

A few people take excellent care of their cars such as keeping it in the garage all the time, only driving it on the weekends, polishing everyday, and many many more ways. Not everybody does that though. Most people only get what's needed to be taken care of, taken care of. Proper car maintenance is crucial no matter what and that's what helps keep our vehicles running and operating smoothly.

A lot of people don't know about ways to properly take care of their vehicles, especially when it comes to changes in seasons. Basically most of the car break down incidents happen during the summertime and it's all because of the lack of proper car maintenance. Here are a few ways to help keep your car fully operational and run just fine during the summer time:

Have it taken to a certified and trusted mechanic.

This is a simple step to having your vehicle run well during the summer. Take your vehicle to a certified and trusted mechanic. It's best to take it to the local dealership where you bought the car and have them check it out (if your dealership has a maintenance department).

Have them check important components, such as the air conditioning system, inside and out. If there are any changes needed, have those taken care of immediately or as soon as possible. Even if they're really small problems, it's best to have them solved immediately or as soon as possible. Like they say “A little goes a long way”. Think about it. If you have those small problems taken care of, then you've prevented a “trickle down” effect since sometimes even the littlest things can cause havoc but in this case, saved you hundreds of dollars or even thousands.

Always check and monitor your tires.

This is definitely one thing you must do no matter what. Without tires, our cars would not be able to turn corners or even move. This is a very vital and crucial component to your vehicle.

Have your tires replaced if necessary but you don't have to if your current tires are just fine.

One thing you absolutely have to do is monitor the air pressure in your tires. The smart idea is to have the air pressure slightly lower than the manufacture's required level since your tires will collect heat making them expand. After all, you wouldn't want to have a blowout while going 75 mph down the highway. Also, you must check the tread level. The method of knowing when your tires need to be replaced is not by when you hydroplane or lose control suddenly because of the lack of grip. The smart and the best way to find out is by simply taking a penny and placing Lincoln's head into it. If the tread reaches or goes past his head, then your tires are fine but if it's lower than the head, then that means you have to get new tires.

Keep your eyes on fluid levels!!

This is one major mistake many people overlook, thus causing breakdowns which will burn a hole in not just in your wallet but your bank account as well. Fluids are very important to our vehicles. Without them, there would be nothing but grinding metal causing massive friction and dangerously high temperatures causing a great deal of wear on the vehicle, reducing the life of the vehicle.

The key fluids to keep your eyes on are:

  • Windshield Wiper fluid
  • Antifreeze
  • Brake fluid
  • Motor Oil!!

The most crucial one out of that list is motor oil (if you haven't noticed). The reason why motor oil is the most important one is because it's the fluid that keeps our engines running properly, reducing friction and lowering engine bay temperatures. Have your oil changed when necessary since gunky and dirty motor oil won't do you much good since it can leave you with a nasty build up on engine parts that causes damage, which also can cost you quite a bit of money for the parts to be replaced.

Have important and necessary parts replaced.

This is another major way to help keep your vehicle running properly. There are three crucial components you must pay attention to.

These components are:

  • Battery
  • Air Filter
  • A/C System

It's a good idea to have your battery checked since car batteries lose 1% of power everyday and most people don't ever suspect it. If your battery is fine, then leave it alone. If it's low on power, then get it replaced. If you take your time and shop smart for your next car battery, you'll not only save money but also increase your mileage slightly by about 1%-2% since some batteries are lightweight helping reduce the weight of the vehicle. Air filters most definitely need to be monitored since those can get really dirty, really fast. It's a good idea to have it replaced since clumped up and dirty air filters reduce air intake, rob power and decrease fuel mileage. As far as the A/C system goes, make sure all parts of it are working properly so that you can drive down the road in a freezer box in the middle of the hot Mojave desert.

So, there you have it, proper ways of preparing a car for summer. I hope this helps you.
