Originally based off of the Dodge Cornet, this 2 door model was the company's low priced muscle car. This fabulous muscle car was base priced at $3,027, and came available with the famous Hemi engine, which raised the base price by about 33%.
With special Super Bee heavy duty suspension, the option of a Mopar A-833 4 spd manual transmission, and of course, high performance tires, this super car was said to be the match of the Plymouth Road Runner. Known only to the Super Bee, Dodge wrapped a stripe with the Super Bee logo around the tail end of this majestic model.
The 1970 Super Bee was the only one to be given a distinct front end from the rest, which came with a dual ovaled grill that dodge affectionately nick-named “bumble bee wings”. Amazing, as enthusiastic as Dodge was about this new look, it turned of most of the buying public and sent sales plummeting for the year. So, instead of give up on this great idea, Dodge also produced 4 concept Super Bee convertibles, where these 4 cars are today, nobody knows…
The 1970 Super Bee came with the engine choices of a 383 Big Block, which was rated at 335 hp. A 426 Hemi V8, which put out 425 horses, or a 440 Big Block V8, which pushed 390 horse every time. Dodge produced and sold 15,506 of these beautiful bumble bees in 1970, and today they are worth more than a mint.
Although it is a rare spectacle to see one of the original Super Bee's, I implore you to seek them out, they are more than amazing to look at, and even more amazing to drive.
