How to get better gas mileage out of almost every vehicle.
Drive Slower
Driving at speeds above 60 miles an hour greatly lowers gas mileage. The average for most efficient driving is around 55mph. another way to think about this is for every 5mph over 60mph you drive is like paying an extra 20 cents a gallon on gas. Also when you are driving at highway speeds keep the windows up and turn the air-conditioning on if needed. Windows that are down cause drag on the car at higher speeds.
Drive More Gently
Lots of acceleration and breaking causes gas mileage to go down. Try not to drive when there is going to be lots of traffic. This is even more important when driving on the highway.
Don't Leave Your Vehicle Idling
An idling vehicle is getting ZERO miles to the gallon. Turn your vehicle off when you expect a wait. When you first start up you vehicle wait a minute or two to let the engine warm up. Don't let it warm up too long. This will help improve gas mileage.
Don't Tote Around Extra Weight
Don't carry around extra weight if you don't need too. A heavier vehicle requires more energy to move.
Keep Your Engine Maintained
Change oil every 3000 miles and when you change the oil clean/replace air filter and check coolant. If you have a carbureted engine make sure the carburetor is clean and tuned. Check to make sure all sensors are working. replace fuel filter every three years or 36,000 miles. Keep sparkplugs clean and replace them when they start getting bad. When you replace the sparkplugs also replace the spark plug wires. Make sure your PVC valve is working and other emission control devices are tuned and working properly.
This gas crisis is so out of hand, that I've resorted to drastic measures. Recently I converted my 99 Nissan to utilize water as fuel from an easy to install kit, I obtained online from a company called Water4fuel,info
