Five Famous Movie and Television Cars

What's your favorite movie or television car? Let's look at the top five and try to decide on the one you like best.

The General Lee - made famous in The Dukes of Hazzard, this bright orange 1969 Dodge Charger had the boys drooling at the car and the girls drooling at the boys driving the car. During the filming of the television series an estimated 309 ‘General Lees' were used, and even miniatures were used toward the end of the series as the Dodge Charger was becoming hard to find. Films that followed the series were The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) and The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning (2007). Interestingly the series was preceded by the Moonrunners.

The Batmobile - every kid (and their dad) wanted their own Batmobile. The Batmobile made its first television appearance in 1965 when the Ford Lincoln Futura, handmade in Italy at a cost of US$250,000 as a concept car that never made it to the streets, was acquired for a mere US$1 and was recommissioned by 20th Century Fox.

Herbie - the VW Beetle that had a mind of its own. Herbie first starred in The Love Bug in 1969 and went on to do many more films, though upgraded somewhat in each movie version. It is still a popular car today.

KITT - who could go past KITT from the Knight Rider fame. The computer powered 1982 Pontiac Trans Am that was loaded with many special features also included a voice synthesizer. The car that could talk had us all enthralled. KITT stood for Knight Industries Two Thousand. KITT's predecessor was KARR. Other movie versions of the Knight Rider were Teen Knight Rider (1997-1998), Knight Rider 2000 (1991), Knight Rider 2010 (1994) and Knight Rider (2008).

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - the car that could fly. This film had us all wanting our own nutty inventor to make us a car like that. The original book was written by Ian Fleming (James Bond) and published in 1964, and was later developed into a musical film in 1968.
