Self drive cars are cars which, as of yet, are not safe for use on the road, but look a very interesting concept if the idea can be refined. At the moment the car must be driven round a track once, then you simply press the start button and it go's round the track at racing speeds.
Will They Ever Be Safe For The Road?
This is an interesting question as, unlike on a test track, unexpected obstacles may appear on the road, for example a person, a young child or even another car. It is because of this that these cars, in my opinion, will be unsafe on the road for quiet along time yet.
Are They The Future?
Yes and no. This is because at the current time the cars are only petrol and diesel which are gradually slipping out of favour because of their rising prices and the devastating affect on the environment; this is causing more people to look towards alternatives which cause less damage to the environment, such as Hydrogen Fuel cells.
How Far In The Future?
Realistically? Probably about 10 to 15 years, but don't take my word for it, with ever advancing science everybody could be, in around 10 years, be driving clean auto-driving cars which could, potentially, reduces accidents hugely and make the world a much safer place.
