Fundraisers

There are some fundraisers going on in September.

September and October seem to be the month that many non profit organizations organize a charitable walk a thon. The Cancer Caring Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is no different. On September 20th, they are hosting a 5k walk to try and help raise money for cancer research. Other companies like Burger King, Coca Cola, and Heinz are helping to sponsor this event. The event will be held in North Park at Harmar Grove across from the North Park Swimming Pool. Walkers need to register at the table at 9 am. That is when you are to turn in donations, and have a continental breakfast. That is also when walkers who raised a minimum of fifty dollars will get their 2008 5k t-shirt. Walkers try and get pledges from friends, family, co-workers and anyone else who would like to help raise money. If someone is unable to walk in the walk-a-thon, they can be a "spirit walker," which is you still collect the pledges and mail them in. A spirit walker is still considered for the prizes for raising the most money. The top ten fundraisers will have the opportunity to be guests at a luncheon hosted by Ryan Clark of the Pittsburgh Steelers!

Another event happening in September is the Stand Up To Cancer campaign. Three of the top television stations: NBC, CBS, and ABC are going to take a stand and try to raise funds to help cancer research. They plan of getting cancer back to the front burner. The event will be commercial free and will be held on September 5th, at 8 pm. Many different celebrities have committed themselves to helping for this broadcast, including Casey Afflick, Christian Applegate, Selma Hayek, Forest Whittiker, Lance Armstrong, Kirsten Dunst, and more.

The Cancer Caring Center is located in 4117 Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield Pa. There the staff provides free emotional, and social supportive services for cancer patients, their family and friends. It was estbalished through the generosity of Burger King and it's partners Heinz and Coca Cola. The provide services such as professional counseling, support groups such as pet therapy for children, couple's counseling, breast cancer, wellness, bereavement for children education programs and ourtreach groups in cities like Bloomfield, Butler, Cranberry, Bethel Park and more. The center is celebrating 20 years of service to the community. The caring center also has other events such as a golf tornament, and a Pittsburgh Steeler Fashion Show: now that is something to behold.

Cancer is the development of abnormal cells within the body. It is classified by the cells in which it orginated from. Some people may have liver cancer cells present themselves in the brain: this is metosis where the cells themselves travel to other parts of the body. Different people are affected differently based on the cancer cells, even those with the same kind of cancer are treated differently. How doctors treat one person with Lymphoma may be different than how they treat another person with lymphoma. There are different stages of the disease as well. Many people are aware of cancers like breast, prostate, lung, and leukemia.

Cancer is becoming more and more know. It affects more and more people as the years go on. WE need to support events like Stand Up 2 Cancer and any walk a thons that many be happening in our areas. If you are in the Pittsburgh area, please look into what you can do to help the Cancer Caring Center's walk a thon.
