The Savannah Ghost

This is a true story, as told to my sister by a woman she used to work with

Melissa and her boyfriend Jeff were visiting Savannah, Georgia when they decided to take a ghost tour. Many cities have them -- you pay a fairly exhorbitant fee, then show up at a late, late hour to meet a tour guide. The guide takes you around the city, showing you local haunted hot spots and telling stories at each one. Both Charleston and Savannah have ghost tours that have been rated the best in the country.

First you must understand that Melissa and Jeff aren't really believers in the supernatural. They were only taking the ghost tour because it seemed like something fun to do, but they didn't expect to see anything. They are true cynics. So they paid for a certain time slot earlier in the day and returned at the designated time to meet their guide.

Problem was, there was no one else going on the tour with them. The guide showed up on time but it looked like it would just be the three of them. Since it was such a small group, the guide suggested they could make it a bar-hopping tour, where he'd take them from bar to bar and tell the stories over drinks. This is highly unusual for a ghost tour, but Melissa and Jeff decided it sounded like fun and agreed.

After stopping at several bars they arrived at a place called the 17hundred90 house, a bed and breakfast. Next door to the house is a restaurant that was built over a spot where a woman once fell to her death. The guide was able to get them into the back kitchen because he knew someone who worked there, and he pointed out a stain on the floor. Melissa could see it but Jeff couldn't. It was plain as day, so she figured Jeff was playing a prank on her even though it wasn't like him to do something like that. The guide told them the stain is visible to some people but not others and that it is in the exact spot where the woman landed.

They moved on to another bar but it was getting late and they decided it was time to go. The tour guide called a cab for them and said he needed to go to the restroom but before he left, Jeff tipped him with some cash from his pocket. "You paid him too much," Melissa said once the guide was out of earshot, but Jeff figured the man had given them such personalized service, he deserved it.

Minutes ticked by as they waited for the guide to return. He never did. They went to the bathroom to check on him but he was nowhere to be found. They searched the bar, still nothing. And the cab the man had called for them never showed up. Finally the bar was closing and they had no choice but to walk the few miles to their hotel.

They went to bed and thought no more of it but the next morning, as Jeff was searching his pants pockets from the night before, he found the cash he'd given the tour guide as a tip. How had that gotten there? They called the tour company, concerned because he had so abruptly disappeared the night before, but the company informed them no one had given a tour the night before. Their guide was a no-show. Or was he...?

So what do you think? One too many drinks? Or is it possible the couple was given a ghost tour by an actual ghost?
