Nine Legitimate Writing Sites Which Pay

I was looking for legitimate writing sites which compensate authors. Writing sites like these are mushrooming and there are worries of scams amongst them. Triond has been on the top list of writing websites which pay me dutifully every month. But I decided that I need to look at other sites to earn more from my freelance writing activity - thus, the search for legitimate writing sites.

Here is a short list of get-paid-to-write sites which I know for sure has actually paid its authors.

Academia Research

Academia Research is a website which allows you to get paid for writing assignments. These writing assignments, which take the form of academic papers, have to meet the demands of students from the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain, thus the stricter selection process. You need to provide your CV when you sign up for an account. Subsequently, you will need to pass a test essay given by their editorial team. Once you have passed the test, your account will be activated. You can then search for writing jobs available from your control panel. You can be paid between $6 and $20 per page. You do not have the rights to your article once it is sold. There is also a strict writing guideline you have to comply with when you write your assignments. Payment is made via Paypal once you have completed an assignment.

Constant Content

Constant Content allows you to submit articles, photos, videos and illustrations for sale. These articles are often purchased by magazine editors or website content developers or bloggers for blog entries. There are many licenses for these people to purchase, namely full rights license, unique rights license and usage rights license. If you have articles previously published, you can still sell them at Constant Content for usage rights license. These buyers are constantly looking for material and if they can't find them at Constant Content, they can make a private or public request for the specific articles to be written. Many writers will attempt to do so and they will have a list of articles pertaining to that topic in no time. Payment is made on the first week of every month once you reach $50 in your account.

eHow

If you're good at writing "how-to" articles, then go to eHow. In order for you to get paid for writing for eHow, you need to sign up for a free account and join the Writer's Compensation Program. You can then publish an article, submit photos and videos. Once you have published an article, you will be compensated for pageviews and its content. The more useful the article is, the more money you will earn. eHow pay its members after reaching a threshold of $10. At eHow, you retain all your rights to your work. Unfortunately, eHow is only for writers who are US citizens above the age of 18 years old.

Demand Studios

Demand Studios has many websites on various topics of interest. You can get freelance writing assignments from Demand Studios and get paid for them. First of all, you need to provide your CV when you sign up for an account. Once it is approved, their editorial staff will match writing jobs based on your interests, skills and competence. You can receive an upfront payment for your approved assignments. The payment varies according to your content. You will be paid via Paypal every Friday or a check for special assignments if the editorial team contacted you via email. The downside is that Demand Studios owns all rights to the content. And it is only for US citizens above the age of 18 years old.

Ground Report

At Ground Report, you can publish news stories, photos or videos. You get paid via Paypal at end of each month based on statistics from the previous month. You will receive a proportionate share of the payout based on the traffic to your published materials. Whatever you publish at Ground Report must be original. The best part is that you retain all rights to your work. You also get to choose from 4 different kind of Creative Commons licenses for your work.

Associated Content

At Associated Content, you can write articles on any topic and submit them for approval. Once they are approved, you can start earning money. Besides articles, you can also submit videos, audios and slideshows. There are two ways you can be compensated at Associated Content, namely Performance Payment and Upfront Payment. You are only eligible for Upfront Payment if you are a US citizen above 18 years old. They pay via Paypal once your earnings amount to $1.50 and payments are sent every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for Upfront Payments or the beginning of every month for Performance Payments. At Associated Content, you can submit articles under the Exclusive, non-Exclusive or Display-Only rights grant. The different rights you grant affect the distribution of your materials to their partnership sites.

Helium

Helium is a publishing website which allows you to write articles on various topics. You can either write articles based on topics others have written before or make up your own category. Helium is famous for its rating system. It allows readers to compare 2 articles of similar topics or titles to determine which is the better one. As such, your article will be ranked against other articles written by other writers. Your earnings is based on your article ranking and the number of pageviews you get. Apart from performance payment, Helium also organizes contest where you can win cash. At Helium Marketplace, there is a list of articles wanted by websites or magazines. You can write an article based on the topic they requested and hopefully, website owners or magazine editors will pick yours up. You can be paid a lump sum for that. They pay via Paypal once you reach $25.

Review Stream

At Review Stream, you can write reviews on books, hotels, products, places, cities, practically anything. Once you submit the reviews, the editors will review them, reject or accept them. The current rate for each piece of review is $2 if accepted. However, sometimes your review may not meet their criteria. As such, you can be paid the bulk rate which is the current rate divided by 5, in this case 40 cents. On top of that, every vote pays 10 cents. You can get paid via PayPal after reaching the threshold of $50. You need not sign up to write reviews for them.

Triond

At Triond, you can get paid for writing articles, publish photos, videos and audio materials. You are free to write on any topic you like and submit them. You can even write in other languages besides English. Once your material is approved by the admin, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from Triond to notify you that your article has been published. They will tell you where the article has been published. Triond has many affiliate sites pertaining to different topics. So you may have your articles published at different websites if you write about different things. Triond will automatically pay via PayPal on the 15th of every month once you have earned at least 50 cents, lowest payout so far. Payment is based on an ad-revenue sharing scheme as well as the number of pageviews. Triond only accepts original materials which has never been published elsewhere before.

Note: Whichever website you choose to write for, it is best to tread with caution. Try out by submitting a few articles and see if you like their system. If you are sure that the site is the best for you to showcase your writing abilities and get paid for them, then you can go ahead and spend more time and effort on the site. Good luck and keep writing!

I would have to add EduDeposit.com to the list. I have made much more with them than I did with the tons of articles I had here and only got pennies for.

Great article!
#28 by Ashley, Aug 22, 2008
The academia site is a paper mill which sells papers to students. The concept is unethical and against all university student codes of conduct. Anyone buying a paper is plagiarizing, thus by participating, you are assisting them do this. If on the other hand you don't care about that, get writing. The money seems pretty good.
#29 by Edi, Aug 22, 2008
A word of caution about Helium. You will not be able to delete your articles once you submit them and earning stars for writing is very tricky. They tell you that you need to have a number of articles rated in top 10 or so to get the star, but if you have many articles that scored lower you want get any writing stars even if you have required number rated high enough, and no extra money! And even when initially you may get some stars you may lose them without warning. LoL
#30 by Mark, Aug 22, 2008
I guess by "legitimate" you don't mean ethical. Academia Research is nothing more than a way for students to cheat. No self-respecting writer would participate in that.
#31 by beauley, Lucien, Aug 22, 2008
Very good article Sydney. I will certainly look into each.
#32 by Adam, Aug 22, 2008
I'm part of a team that founded Mindbottling.com. We pay for answers to technical questions in a fashion similar to triond and associated content. Please take a look at the site and let us know what you think!
#33 by Michael W. Ring, Aug 23, 2008
Thank you for your article. Could you help? I've had trouble locating Academia Research's site. I've helped a former Yale graduate student from Nigeria by editing his thesis. I did not write it for him; just cleaned up his English. So, it surely wasn't cheating, as some detractors might suggest. Also, can you tell me what "CV" means? I've been a writer many years, but only now am attempting to find viable publishing locations. Thanks again, Sydney.
#34 by Sydney Hazelton, Aug 23, 2008
Thank you all for your wonderful comments! I'm sorry I did not explain CV earlier. It actually means Curriculum Vitae or resume. It is often required when you apply for a job. It is a description of your work experiences, educational background and skills. Academia Research can be found at the following URL http://www.academia-research.com. Keep on writing, everyone!

#54 by louie jerome, Aug 27, 2008
Useful list by as I'm from UK I'm ruled out of most of them. Triond pays writers from anywhere via Paypal. You can make good money but you need to market your work. It won't just come in if you sit and wait for it.

#57 by MYRA, Aug 27, 2008
Thanks for the info. i did have a question, and i don't know if you would be able to help me. i'm new in this, so my question is, do i send my article to all the companies or just to one? i mean a different article to each company or the same one to see where it gets accepted?

thanks.
#58 by Sydney Hazelton, Aug 27, 2008
Hi Myra, It's important that you read the terms and conditions for writing for each of these sites. There are some sites which accepts articles which has never been published before such as Triond. There are some others which will accept previously published material. Some of the sites allow you to publish anything, others give you an assignment to complete. So, I'd suggest you try one or two of these sites first and test the waters. If you like what you're seeing, then you can continue there or venture into other sites. All the best, Myra!
#59 by raguett, Aug 27, 2008

How can academia research be considered legitimate when it is engaged in academic dishonesty?

But then, does honesty mean anything in academia any more?

#64 by Chris Stonecipher, Aug 28, 2008
Thank you for sharing. I have an account at helium along with Triond. However, I have yet to post anything at helium. That is my next project.

I like Associated Content but I'm not too crazy about Helium; you could also add ForumBooster to this list; they have a section for article writers too and if you are accepted in their program you can get $6 per 500 word article ($4 per 250 words). You can't choose your topic but this is interesting if you are willing to do the research and write the requested articles; I have been paid by them on Paypal so they are an honest website.
#69 by Kiki Stamatiou, Aug 29, 2008
I found this article to be interesting and very informative. I too have work published on the Triond website, published under my pen name Joanna Maharis which is also my USER name.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the info.
#71 by Nick Howes, Aug 30, 2008
Very interesting stuff. I\'m looking to expand my writing outlets.
#72 by Michael, Aug 30, 2008
To the person who asked about making money from these sites, it will be, at best, enough for a cup of coffee. If you are very lucky it will be enough for a Starbucks cup.
I post here to hone my skills. I made over $4.00 one month with Helium, a couple of years ago. I think that was my high month.
Payment for you articles comes from selling yourself to the newspapers and it takes alot of time. These sites are available for you to see yourelf in print online. The site owners make the money, but they provide the venue so that is fair.
#73 by chirissa, Aug 30, 2008
I first encountered Helium, but I prefer Triond. It's not for money nor fame & glory that I am after for in submitting some of my works. I am just looking for an outlet where in my ideas/ideals can have the oppurtunity to be communicated with other earthlings.

Anyway, thanks for featuring those outlets. I might as well try some of them someday.
#74 by Julia Kemp, Aug 31, 2008
Hello: This was a fantastic article. Very informative and enlightening. With all the website out there it is difficult to figure out which ones to trust and which ones are scams. I stumbled upon Triond by chance and am certainly glad I did.
Thank you for your research on other sites that offer creative outlets.
#75 by Sarah, Aug 31, 2008
thanks! this was madd helpful.
#76 by Beth, Sep 1, 2008
I too have tried helium and triond, but have moved on to storyMash, it's the best for my favorite type of writing which is now collaborative fiction. A real treat if you like storytelling...

I can vouch that they're legit as I've been paid three times now (once for winning $150).
#77 by Scotty Mack, Sep 2, 2008
Excellent post! There are certainly plenty of places to write.

I just wanted to point out that I, too, discovered Helium and wrote at that site for three months, posting around thirty articles or so. It was the first place that I found that gave me an opportunity to do something that I had forgotten that I enjoyed do much ... writing.

I actually made $164.00 during the three months that I wrote there, selling a couple of my articles to companies that were looking for reviews of products that, I must admit, I have never even seen or tried. (I know ... what a sellout!)

I recently discovered blogging and have now devoted all of my efforts to that. I have quickly climbed the charts for my keyword niche but am doing it for the creative outlet, not for money. At some point, as my popularity increases (I've got a half-full glass here), I hope to monetize things.

Thank you for taking the time to show places that others can use, not only as a creative outlet, but as a place to hone their skills and maybe make a buck or two in the process!
#78 by Hendry Lee, Sep 3, 2008
I'm sorry, but the lack of links show that you only want traffic and not satisfying the readers. I almost give it a thumbs down because of this, but well...

Thanx a lot for sharing.
#80 by Heart, Sep 4, 2008
Thank you for sharing, I have been scouting for legitimate paying sites since I am a stay at home mom. This will work for me.
#81 by Annie A., Sep 4, 2008
Thank you so much for the informative article. I'm new to the field of writing (sending stories/poems, etc.) for exposure and payment. Being able to find legitimate sites is a def. plus.
#82 by Lindy, Sep 5, 2008
Thank yo for this article! There is so much on the internet about where and how to make money that it makes my head spin. Your article helped me a lot and now have a much more clear idea of where I am going to focus my energy.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
#84 by Sophie, Sep 5, 2008
Good work, Sydney! I write mainly for Associated Content and retain all the rights to my articles. I am not keen on Helium. Triond is OK, but it would be better if they paid upfront.
#85 by rennyg, Sep 5, 2008
I think your article is very informative, especially for rookie freelance writers like myself. How were you able to increase your earnings on-line and get noticed?

Nice post, thank you.

I wonder, what is your take on storymash.com?
#89 by JohnL, Sep 8, 2008
Excellent article. I have a few short stories I wrote a while back but never got them published. Which are the best for getting my stories out there?
#90 by Judy Sheldon, Sep 8, 2008
Interesting article. It sure stirred up a lot of conversation.
I do agree with some of those above in that writing someone else's paper is wrong. In fact we had to do a thesis on plagiarism. So perhaps they could purchase a paper on that. lol
#91 by Sydney Hazelton, Sep 9, 2008
Hi JohnL, you can try Triond. But someone actually suggested StoryMash for fiction pieces. I have not looked into that since I don't write that genre. Take a look at these two. Thanks for reading my article!
#92 by JohnL, Sep 9, 2008
Thanks Sydney. I appreciate the advice.
#93 by JohnL, Sep 9, 2008
BTW. As far as the academic papers, I don't think it would be plagiarism. That is when you pass off someone else's work as your own. In this case if the student buys the paper and ALSO the rights to it, isn't it legally their paper?
#94 by Michael, Sep 9, 2008
Great article.. well researched and well written. Has anyone ever made a living from an online writing gig? It is extra money and we do it to hone our skills and share our ideas.
#95 by Prinz Dodo, Sep 9, 2008
I found it interesting and worthwhile. Thank you
#96 by JohnL, Sep 9, 2008
Just out of curiosity, does anyone actually criticize someone else's work on these websites? I don't mean to be negative but if someone feels my work isn't that good or vice versa is it appropriate to be honestly constructive?
#97 by Lauren, Sep 9, 2008
Hi John,
I have seen on many occasions writers on Triond leaving negative or negatively reinforced comments. It happens all the time. Just check out my article on Writinghood.

http://www.writinghood.com/Online-Writing/Proper-Triond-Etiquette-Friends-Versus-Fans.246007

Of course writing can\'t be peaches and cream all the time. Sometimes you have to stir the pot.

Informative information by the way Sydney.
#98 by Kim, Sep 9, 2008
I didn't know about some of these sites. Others I have tried and did not like. I have had success with ehow as midnitewriter.
#99 by Denver Dave, Sep 10, 2008
Hey John, about feedback, I believe any form of feedback, and sometimes especially criticism is important and healthy. I get my fair share on SM, probalby more than most, but I use it as a guide to help improve, and I need it!
#100 by Michelle Cowie, Sep 11, 2008
I have just started using Triond and I\'m ot sure how it works. I have emailed them but they did not get back to me.

I have had a few page views but not earned anything. I just wonder what has to happen for a revenue to start happening?

Can anyone answer this question for me please.

Good info Sydney I will try these other sites.
#101 by Sydney Hazelton, Sep 11, 2008
Hi Michelle,
I tried to look for you at Triond but could not find you. Maybe you used a different name.

How many articles have you written? At Triond, it's best to write as many as you can to earn more from pageviews. You should see some earnings soon. Meantime, publicise your articles to friends and relatives, at bookmarking sites and so on. You will receive more pageviews that way.

Triond support usually gets back to you within a few days' time. Be patient.

If you have any other problems, you can send me a PM.
#102 by Reta, Sep 13, 2008
Hey
I read all the links I could find.
Then I read these comments.
I made a list of all the names of
the sites mentioned.
I am going to check them out.
Thank you for the reviews.
You have saved me a lot of time
trying to find sites.
I did notice there are a few real
pessimists on this list.
Use your own judgement and stop
blaming others.
Thank you ,again.
Reta
#103 by A Pay Per Click \, Sep 15, 2008
Yup. Keep kidding yourself Reta. Believe me, you won\'t make money on these sites but you might successfully delude yourself you are a serious writer if you get the odd $5 for a couple of hundred words (like most people on the above list). If you are smart, you will use one or more of these sites to get a portfolio of work published then try to make proper money elsewhere. Good luck!

Nine Legitimate Writing Sites Which (SHOULD BE THAT NOT WHICH OR WHICH, PAY AND THAT WOULD NOT MAKE ANY SENSE WOULD IT?) Pay

I was looking for legitimate writing sites which (AGAIN THIS SHOULD BE THAT NOT WHICH) compensate authors. Writing sites like these are mushrooming and there are worries of scams amongst them. Triond has been on the top list of writing websites which (NEED I SAY IT AGAIN?) pay me dutifully every month. But I decided that I need to look at other sites to earn more from my freelance writing activity - thus, the search for legitimate writing sites.

Here is a short list of get-paid-to-write sites which (YES, SHOULD BE THAT AGAIN!) I know for sure has actually paid its authors.

It's hard to take writing advice from someone who does a poor job of writing a simple intro. I would wager you have only published online on sites that let anyone post. I stumbled upon this site and thought I had discovered a new resource but frankly I am not impressed. Your writing stinks.

What a crock, 'the Editor in me'! Find a pot and put it in! Sydney, your article is one of the most informative and interesting articles I've read in a long time. Maybe that is why you have 106 comments and only one critique! If it was his/her mouth, I'd say put a sock in it!
This is the type of article that people need to get started publishing their own work. And sure..., some people have rusty writing skills, but they usually improve with practice. The information is what is important.
If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all! However, even constructive criticism should be kept on a private level, just the same as an editor or proofreader would do. Anything criticism wrote for the public is just plain unprofessional.

I would not worry about the comments of 'the editor in me'. It seems that he is a little over-zealous. I have made worse mistakes!

You article is good and very informative - the number of comments prove this. Good luck with your writing.

Don't worry about #104, the editor in me. This was an excellent article and you gave honest feedback as to what you know of each site listed. This reads somewhat as if you are speaking. INternet writing and book writing are very different and often writers are writing late at night when they are tired. You can't please everyone so don't try. Just do your best and edit yourself before hitting submit, even then you may miss something.

I have been a writer with Ehow and Demand Studions for about 8 months. I make about $300 per week from Demand and about $60 per month from Ehow. Demand is tough to get into though, you have to fill out a form and apply with a resume and writing sample. It is well worth it though if you can get accepted to write for them. They only pay $15 per article but the articles are easy and short. Google "Demand Studios" and it will lead you to the application page. Most of the articles you write for them end up on Ehow so check out what the articles look like www.ehow.com

Check out ComparedBy.Us. It will pay $1.00 per review with a $1.00 bonus if the review is the first for a product. I am positive that they will pay out (once you reach $20.00). Disclosure: I am the Product Manager for ComparedBy.Us
