They made them from marble for there floors and walls. There are two different types of tessellation, regular and irregular. Regular tessellations consist of 3 or more sided shapes. An irregular tessellation consists of complex shapes repeated over and over. Johannes Kepler was one of the first person to document on tessellation.
How Does Tessellation Work?
Tessellation works when a bunch of shapes can be put together without having any spaces in between the shapes. Examples: triangles,squares,hexagons.

They can be found almost anywhere: on windows, tiles, soccer balls, blankets, rugs, brick walls and many other places.
